2050: Shadowrun SNES

    "Present day" of Shadowrun First Edition. Today our world is radically different from our great-grandfathers knew. Where once super power nations dominated the globe, threatening all with sudden nuclear annihilation, the superpowers have have now broken up into many smaller, autonomous nations, and corporations have taken over their once-immense power. Our science and technology, too, set us apart, with current levels making previous advances look like a child's experiments with a science kit. Magic has emerged again on Earth and we live in an Awakened world.
    January 3 CFS: Sales of the blockbuster sim Free Fall hit fifty million.[1]
    January 14: MegaMedia Inc. announces the retirement of Amanda "Euphoria" Lockhart. Their representative does not connect the announcement to Euphoria's recent abduction, rumored to be a failed kidnapping attempt by a deranged fan.[2]
    January 15
        Strice Foods announces the end to distribution of its popular food additive Amber Gel, denying connections to Euphoria's missed promotional dates.[2]
        One week after the destruction of a Werner-Voss corporate shuttle and the deaths of all one hundred seventy-five passengers and crew, the Revenants policlub claims responsibility for the attack.[3]
    February 17 UCAS: Faux armored clothing gains popularity among the fashion elite.[1]
    March 19: The Campeche Massacre. Aztechnology Corporate Security opens fire on unarmed protestors in Campeche, killing hundreds.[1]
    April 7 AGS: Corruption scandals lead to massive government reform.[1]
    May 6: A kraken sinks a Vancouver-bound ferry, killing all on board.[1]
    May 22: Aztlan seizes a portion of Venezuela from Amazonia.[1]
    May 30: Thousands of metahumans march on Atlanta, calling for increased awareness of metahuman rights.[1]
    August 10: Keyboard-sized seventh-generation cyberdecks enter the market.[1]
    August 28: The Algonkian-Manitou Council contracts Aztechnology to assist in recovering from their agricultural collapse.[1]
    September 13: Closed-circuit simsense technology is commercially available, allowing a single rigger to monitor an entire building.[1]
    September 22: Aztlan annexes independent Columbia.[1]
    September 26 AZTLAN: Morituri te salutant debuted as a game show focused on gladiatorial-style death matches. It scores the highest ratings for a trid debut in the history of Aztlaner broadcasting.[1]
    October 4: Corsica secedes from France.[1]
    November 9: Buttercup reveals that she is a free spirit.[1]
    November 24: Proteus AG wins the contract to construct arkoblocks off the shore of the Japanese Imperial State.[1]
    December 14: The Trans-polar Aleut Nation leaves the Native American Nations.[1]
    Dr. Randall Grant dies, apparently in a freak accident. Alamos 20,000 is strongly suspected of perpetrating his assassination to stop him from revealing their connections to Dr. Armand Duplessis.[4]
    Harold Jonathan Mason, one of the founders of MOOSE (the Metahuman Order of Occultists, Sorcerers, and Enchanters), dies at the age of 48.[5]
    Shadowrun (SNES): Jake Armitage defeats Drake and the malevolent AI in Aneki Corporation.
    Kyle Teller achieved some measure of fame in the magical community in 2050 by solving the sensational case of Wilhemina Keene: "Keene had been a registered nurse and adept mage performing ritual sacrifices with newborn babies stolen from hospitals throughout New England. She killed twelve before the FBI finally caught up with her on the verge of murdering her thirteenth, the final element in whatever bizarre ritual she'd been performing."[6]
    Tadamako Shibanokuji regains control of Yamatetsu from Hideo Yoshida. As part of his new vision for the corporation, he begins integrating metahumans into the management structure.[7]

    January 31: Proteus AG qualifies for German extraterritoriality.[1]
    February 17: The study of ancient ninjas lends credence to the physical mage theory.[1]
    March 1: A Seattle street gang called the Mindfraggers attacks the Octagon. The Universal Brotherhood's security wipes them out. The only survivor is taken to Seattle General in critical condition; she later relates her story of the incident to Zebediah Wanderly.[2]
    March 12: Rebel forces begin commando raids against Aztlan troops in Yucatán.[1]
    April 6-7: At approximately midnight local time, the towns of Gilroy and San Martin, California Free State, erupt in violence. Roughly ten percent of the towns' populations are dead and most of the rest flee. San Martin's City Hall and Universal Brotherhood chapter house are razed to the ground. In his investigations, Zebediah Wanderly concludes that two insect spirit hives came into contact and instinctively attacked each other.[2]
    April 27: Anti-Japanese terrorists bomb the San Francisco BART line.[1]
    April 28: Relations between the Russian Republic and the Allied German States are normalized.[1]
    April 30: Mary-Beth Tyre is kidnapped just after her sixth birthday.[3]
    May 1: Just before 10:00 PM local time, freelance reporter Frederick Davitt is murdered at his apartment door in Washington, FDC. His bludgeoned body is discovered in a garbage bin behind his apartment.[2]
    May 6: Shortly before 11:00 PM local time, former NewsNet investigative reporter Zebediah Wanderly uploads his notes and research into the Universal Brotherhood to the Denver Nexus from Grodin's Tavern in Seattle. The Brotherhood destroys the building to kill him and stop the upload. Lone Star manages to identify Wanderley and the street decker Icepick through dental records and conclude that Icepick failed to stop Wanderley from destroying the building.[2]
    May 19: Final Fling, featuring simsense starlet Euphoria, is released.[1]>
    May 21: The great western dragon Schwartzkopf appears in the town of Furth im Wald at the foot of Schwarzkoppe Mountain and declares himself its ruler.[1]

    The Justice Syndicate releases the "Mather Syndicate" report, exposing the conditions at the Cabrini Green housing projects in Chicago. The city is forced to reclaim the projects, but refuses to recognize the tenants' contracts, declaring the projects abandoned and freeing the city from any legal obligations to provide services to its residents.[11]

    August 30 UCAS: The first rumors emerge of Black Hammer, a Matrix utility that mimics the deadly effects of Black IC.[1]
    September 7: The UCAS Congress passes the Endangered Species Act, which protects a number of Awakened creatures.[1]
    October 26 SPAIN: Sol Media Group acquires numerous Latin American media and telecomm companies.[1]
    November 10-18: Dragonfall: A group of shadowrunners led by Monika Schäfer attempts a raid of the Harfeld Mansion's data vault outside of Berlin. While jacked into the Matrix, Schäfer is killed by an unknown Matrix entity. The survivors of the group, led by Schäfer's promising recruit, investigate the cause of her death. Starting with a search for the person who hired the team, Green Winters, the team eventually learns that after the Great Dragon Feuerschwinge was awakened, she was not killed by the German military as was formerly believed. Winters' brother, Adrian Vauclair, incapacitated Feuerschwinge by separating her soul from her body. During the course of their investigation, the team learns that Vauclair had recovered Feuerschwinge's body and astral essence, and was using them to create a virus intended to kill every dragon on Earth. The team foils Vauclair's plan, with the recruit having the option of liberating Feuerschwinge, enslaving her to an AI named APEX, euthanizing the Great Dragon, or 
simply leaving her imprisoned where she was. During the aftermath, the recruit is approached by Lofwyr for potential employment.
    December 16 EUROPE: An unknown scientist proposes that elven cells resist aging. He calls the phenomenon the Stopwatch Complex.[1]
    Cassie Barnett's shadowrunner team is called to end the Sons of the Green's occupation of a hydroponics bay in the Renraku Arcology.
    Combat Inc.'s 58th Combat Team resigns en masse over disputes over bonus pay and rotation, forming the Fifty-Eighth Battle Brigade.[6]
    Martin de Vries ends a vampire serial killer's fifteen-month reign of terror in Minneapolis/St. Paul with extreme force.[7]
    Shadowrun Returns: The Emerald City Ripper terrorizes Seattle. An independent shadowrunner and friend of Ripper victim Sam Watts discovers the Ripper's identity and his connection to Jessica Watts, Sam's sister. The investigation leads to the Universal Brotherhood operation in Seattle and a fight with insect spirits beneath the Brotherhood building.

    January 17 AZTLAN: Fighting in Yucatán escalates to full scale civil war.[1]
    February 13 JAPAN: Fuchi begins constructing a deep space outpost at Lagrange Point 2.[1]
    March 11 UCAS: The Universal Brotherhood opens its Project Hope camps in the Redmond Barrens of Seattle.[1]
    April 24 UCAS: A group called the Compensation Army sets up camps in DeeCee, demanding compensation for land ceded to the NAN.[1]
    May 31 UCAS: Missing persons cases nationwide rise dramatically. Law enforcement agencies struggle to find a reason.[1]
    July 9 UCAS: The Project Hope camps are shut down for health reasons.[1]
    Acting on "tips" from Ares, the UCAS FBI discovers that insect spirits control the Universal Brotherhood and shut it down, using a cover story of financial corruption. Other nations take similar steps, and the Brotherhood is completely shut down by 2056. Ares assists in destructive raids against local hives, which are reported as widespread incidents of "unmotivated terrorist violence" against the Universal Brotherhood.
    August 8: The AGS government declares a state of emergency over Berlin and tasks the extraterritorial corporations with ending the anarchist rule of the city. Heavy fighting erupts.
    August 22 UCAS: In Chicago, a mega-hive of insect spirits, a previously unknown form of spirit, swarms the city. The UCAS government immediately mobilizes the military.[1]
    August 23: An Ares Macrotechnology Firewatch team assaults the Universal Brotherhood's chapter house in Chicago. The insect spirits escape into the city, causing mass panic. The UCAS government demolishes buildings around the downtown core, trapping over 100,000 civilians within the "Chicago Containment Zone." The official story is of a VITAS outbreak. The Mafia loses contact with the Don of Chicago and the Commissione believes him dead; it transfers control of Chicago operations to Don Leo McCaskill of Milwaukee, a former lieutenant of James O'Malley.[1][2]
    August 24 UCAS: FedPol troops are sent in to subdue the Compensation Army in DeeCee.[1]
    August 26 UCAS: The federal government begins making supply drops into the CCZ.[1]
    September 16 UCAS: Government officials meet with the Tír Princes and Lofwyr for advice on handling the CCZ.[1]
    October 1: An unidentified group penetrates a massive insect hive beneath Cermak Avenue in the Chicago Containment Zone and detonates a sub-tactical nuclear weapon just after the queen spirits erect a magical barrier. Civilians and military personnel witness the huge explosion from outside the Zone. Virtually all the insect spirits in Chicago are knocked into torpor. Official sources refuse to comment.[1]
    October 4 UCAS: Construction of a line of walls around the CCZ is completed.[1]
    November 22 AGS: A joint corporate force uses bug paranoia as an excuse to “liberate” much of Berlin.[1]
    November 24 TÍR TAIRNGIRE: The cordon around Crater Lake is relaxed.[1]
    December 13 UCAS: The light carrier Wolverine and two guided missile frigates are stationed near Chicago.[1]
    December 29 UCAS: A shadow document describing the true situation in Chicago goes public.[1]
    December 31 GLOBAL: The first rumors of Otaku, children who access the Matrix without a cyberdeck, begin to emerge.[1]
    Late December: The media receives documents compiled by residents of the Chicago Containment Zone describing the truth behind the Wall: a Hell-on-Earth scenario where petty warlords exerted control through violence, privation is the norm, and insect spirits openly preyed on the population. Chicago gains a new nickname: Bug City.
    The band Anhedonia breaks up. Lead singer Billy "Oz-Man" Ossian focuses on their record label, Chrome Damage.[3]
    Doris, Shield Wall's second sasquatch singer, passes away from cancer.[4]

    May 5 AGS: Proteus AG closes its Helgoland facility for reconstruction.[1]
    June 8: Insect hives are discovered in several large cities in India.[1]
    June 22: The UCAS Congress formally recognizes the great dragon [1]Dunkelzahn as a legal citizen. A famous "handshake" between Dunkelzahn and UCAS President Thomas Steele sends the Technocrat ticket to the top of the polls.
    July 3: Truman Technologies relocates their headquarters from Chicago to Los Angeles, California Free State.[1]

    September 13: UCAS border control stops nuclear weapons from entering the country. They link the weapons to a previously-unknown organization called Winternight.[1]
    October 25: Fifteen people are killed when a bomb explodes at the Liberation Day parade in San Francisco.[1]
    October 28: A strange aurora appears over Crater Lake.[1][2]
    November 7: UCAS President Thomas Steele and Vice President James Booth are overwhelmingly re-elected to office in "the dullest election of the 21st century."[1]
    December 17 Proteus AG announces plans for a fully submerged arkoblock near Rømø Island.[1]
    The CAS Supreme Court rules that sports teams cannot deny playing time based on metatype. Most professional sports leagues adopt similar policies.[3]

2057: Year of the Dragon

    January: Aurélie de Paladines wins the French presidential election and becomes the first woman to be President of France.
    January 19: The UCAS House of Representatives declares the UCAS Presidential Election of 2056 invalid, cancelling the inauguration of incumbent President Thomas Steele on the next day. Speaker of the House Betty Jo Pritchard becomes president ad interim before new election.[1]
    January 20: Ivory McCabe is inaugurated as President of the CAS.
    January 26 UCAS: President Steele and Vice President Booth are impeached. By default, Speaker of the House Betty Jo Pritchard becomes the first female president of the UCAS.[1]

2058: Year of the Mob

    The Mob War erupts in Seattle.[1]
        January 1: Mafia Don James "The Hammer" O'Malley is assassinated by a Chimera-sniper.[1][2]
        January 4: Mafia Don James "The Hammer" O'Malley's funeral is held in Seattle.[1]
        January 7: Yakuza soldiers start muscling in on Mafia-run businesses, causing fighting to break out between the two group's enforcers.[1]
        January 8: Assassination attempt against Rowena O'Malley is narrowly averted, strengthening her determination to gain control over Seattle's Mafia.[1]
    January 18 CAS: Vice President Ivory McCabe is elevated to president after President Oliver Jackson dies of a sudden heart attack. [2]
    January 31-unknown date:  A small team of shadowrunners led by Michael is brutally ambushed in the newly reclaimed Amerindian lands of the Salish-Shidhe.  Video footage recovered from a dead shadowrunner's eyes is made public, prompting Michael's brother, Joshua to investigate Michael's death, and the true nature of his last mission.  Joshua eventually comes into contact with Sinsearach Council member Harlequin, learning that Harlequin utilized a Mr. Johnson named Caleb Brightmore to hire Michael for the job, and that Michael's team got killed by a Renraku strike team.  Michael's original mission was to destroy Thon's magic source at Ellisia's Tomb in the Salish-Shidhe.  Joshua aids Harlequin in completing Michael's original mission, effectively sealing off Ellisia's tomb. [3]
    February 22: Ares implements "Operation Extermination," a large-scale physical and magical assault on the insect spirits infesting the Chicago Containment Zone. The Chicago quarantine is officially lifted in President Haeffner's State of the Union address.
        Ares uses FAB Strain III, an astrally active bacteria, to target Bug Spirits in the Zone. Unfortunately, strain III does not restrict its depradation to insect spirits—it affects any astral object or being. Chicago's ghoul community is devastated.[2]
    February 26 UCAS: Post Ares's "Operation Extermination", President Haeffner lifts the quarantine around the Chicago Containment Zone (CCZ). Riots break out as refugees from the CCZ attempt to flee the area and surrounding areas push back, but civil authorities manage to broker a peace. Thousands stuck within the CCZ discover that despite the announcement, Chicago remains excised from the modern world.[2]
    April 19 AGS: Saeder-Krupp finished construction of the Essen arcology, which is hailed as a triumph of modern engineering.[2]
    June 10 SCANDINAVIAN UNION: Erika announces the Wireless Matrix Initiative. Building on the cellular network, the WMI promises complete Matrix integration within five years. Several other corporations begin working on projects based on similar technology, including Renraku, Novatech, and Mitsuhama.[2]
    August 3 JAPAN: Renraku successfully recaptures the AI Morgan, and utilizes sections of her programming to develop the Arcology Expert Program (later to be known as the infamous AI Deus). Housed in the SCIRE, it controls the day-to-day care of more than 90,000 people.[2]
    August 10 TÍR TAIRNGIRE: Rinelle ke’Tesrae, a grassroots social movement, is formed in Tír Tairngire and calls for a democratic system to be established. Despite attempts by Tír officials to suppress news of the group’s activities, stories are released in Seattle, UCAS, and the California Free State.[2]
    October 15 CARIBBEAN LEAGUE: In an effort to limit fighting between houngan throughout the Caribbean League, Nadja Daviar declares that the contest for their undeclared leader to receive the talon clippings left to them in Dunkelzahn’s will must be completed by December 31, 2060.[2]
    November 10 ECUADOR: Proteus AG secretly begins construction of a space launch facility which will be revealed to the public in 2061.[2]
    Renraku Europe relocates its HQ from Berlin to Munich and begins the construction of an arcology on the grounds of former Hellabrunn zoo.

    January 6:After a battle between pirates, CAS SEALS, and Aztlan Jaguar guards, the tanker Go Jo is sunk near Cancun, resulting in a massive spill of radioactive waste.[1]
    January 7: Tadamako Shibanokuji, chairmain of Yamatetsu's board of directors, suffers a debilitating stroke. Control of his stock shares temporarily goes to Yamatetsu CEO Saru Iwano, until Tadamako dies, and the shares revert to his son, an Ork named Yuri Shibanokuji.
    January 15:The great dragon Masaru posts a manifesto calling for Philippine independence on Shadowland. Days later, Governor Saru calls for open elections in February 2059. [1]
    February: Carlos Consuni, candidate of the Liberal Catholic Voters Party, is elected President of the Philippines. The Great Dragon Masaru, leader of the Huk Rebels and backer of opposition candidate Filipa Salonga, demands a re-vote that the Japanese governor refuses.
    February 22: Tadamako Shibanojuki, chairman of the board of Yamatetsu Corporation, dies. His son Yuri Shibanojuki replaces him.[1]
    March: 27 people are killed in an industrial accident inside the Renraku Arcology.
    May 3: Ares Macrotechnology purchases a controlling majority in General Motors, giving them a monopoly on industrial production facilities around Detroit.[1]
    May 5: Yamatetsu Corporation relocates its headquarters from Kyoto, Japan, to Vladivostok, Russia.[1]
    May 16: Dosan Aburajoki, Mitsuhama Computer Technologies's representative on the Corporate Court, commits suicide in his home in Kyoto, Japan.
    June 6: Fuchi Industrial Electronics brings suit in the Corporate Court against Renraku Computer Systems for illegally using trade secrets of former Fuchi employee Miles Lanier.
    June 7: Miles Lanier leaves the board of directors of Renraku Computer Systems.
    June 16: Navroz Chandaria is elected to represent Renraku Computer Systems on the Corporate Court, filling the seat previously held by Dosan Aburojaki for Mitsuhama Computer Technologies.

    August 14: Lofwyr purchases all mining rights to several sites in Eifel Mountains despite AGS geological surveys that concluded that any valuable ore has been already mined.[1]
    August 15: Li Feng is elected for Wuxing on the Corporate Court to the seat previously held by David Hague for Renraku Computer Systems.[1]
    August 22: Nadja Daviar regains control of the Ares stock owned by Gavilan Ventures.
    September 29: "White Monday." The Tokyo Stock Exchange suffers its largest single-day drop since December 1989.[1]
    October 6: Villiers International and Cambridge Holdings merge to form Novatech. Richard Villiers resigns from his position of President and CEO of Fuchi Industrial Electronics to head Novatech.[1]
    October 6: Novatech is granted AAA status for the ownership of Corporate Court founding company JRJ International. Lynn Osborne, representative of Fuchi Industrial Electronics, leaves her company to join Novatech and is allowed to stay on the court. Without a representative on the court, and in the absence of a vacant seat, Fuchi Industrial Electronics is downgraded to AA status. Miles Lanier is appointed Novatech's director of security.
    The Draco Foundation announces that Art Dankwalther, to whom Great Dragon Dunkelzahn willed UCAS$34,586,224,739.58, has been discovered.
    October 20: Leonard Aurelius sells all of his Ares stock to Arthur Vogel. Vogel steps down as president of Sierra, Inc., and is replaced by Gary Grey.[1]

    December 3: A massive earthquake of magical origin hits the suburb of Richmond in Vancouver, Salish-Shidhe, but none of the adjacent area. Tens of thousands of people are killed.

    December 19: The Renraku Arcology in Seattle, UCAS, is sealed automatically by security systems, trapping more than 100,000 people inside. Local, federal and corporate authorities deploy troops and declare the arcology off-limits to non-military personnel.[1]
