Related to recent discussions in gopherspace regarding improvements over the
gopher protocol, while remaining simpler than the web, a recent blog post[0] by
C64 OS creator Gregory Nacu dives into a markup syntax for a text-based web.
His motivation, though, is support for C64 hardware and it's limited resources.

It's interesting, though, that a light weight web is being thought about by
different groups for (at least slightly) different reasons.  Goals are similar
in that we all want a low resource, content-centric experience without the
abuses the modern web has allowed.  Being restricted by system resources forces
a level of prioritization that I think is missing from modern developers,
content providers, and users.  These days, creators will indiscriminately use as
many resources as they can and users want as many features (whether they are
necessary or not) as they can get.

C64 OS looks really promising and the accompanying blog is great for some deep
dives into C64 hardware and OS development.  And many of the goals it strives
for are generally applicable to those who are looking for a simpler internet
experience, even if we're not restricted to 64K of RAM and a 1MHz processor
anymore.
