Journalling as a spiritual practice is foundational to my evolution. I write, but you can also journal through audio recording, art, music or creativity. It's a time of reflection of what is going on and where I am going. It helps me observe pattern and often help resolve issues. When my mind is filled with tension, emotions, concerns and unfinished situations, journaling or reflecting can help alleviate this. There is journaling, which can be anything, but is often a listing of event in the day, then there is reflecting, which use part of journaling, with the added use of keeping a process going. Journaling and reflecting can also be used to keep a log of my practice. I'll often keep a dream journal, separated from my normal journal. Swami Sivanada or Rishikesh used to say to keep multiple note book going. Some for reflections, some for likita japa (the writing of mantra) and some others I can't remember now. In Karma Yoga, or the yoga of action (see karma yoga in the garden) reflection is a big part of the process. Karma Yoga is often translated as selfless service, but I'd rather see it as the yoga of action. Any actions can be used as a yoga, your work, your interaction, your entertainment. Your whole life can become a testing ground for your own spiritual development. That exploration is not complete without the help of a dayli reflection.
