Historic South Portland fish shacks washed away by high tide at Willard Beach [1] ['Ariana St Pierre', 'Https'] Date: 2024-01 SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) -- The iconic fish shacks at Willard Beach in South Portland were washed away during the historic high tide on Saturday. Also read: The three fish shacks were caught on camera being pulled apart by the ocean. The shacks at Fishermen’s Point were the last tie to a long fishing history, dating back to the early 1700s. Fishermen’s Point was the first wharf in Portland Harbor and was a major trading site for hundreds of years. The shacks, originally built on the beach, were moved to Fishermen’s Point in the 1880s. Many have been lost to vandalism or storms over the years, but only five remained before the storm of 1978. According to the Press Herald, these last three were just repaired and repainted for preservation efforts in October 2023 Portland broke an all-time record high tide on Saturday. Also read: The Portland tide gauge settled out at 14.57 feet. That's the highest tide ever recorded in Portland. The old record was 14.17 feet, which was set during the blizzard of 1978. The records go back to 1912. The City of South Portland says Bug Light Park is closed at least until Tuesday. There has been major damage to the Greenbelt path leading to the lighthouse, making passage unsafe. Barriers will be placed blocking vehicle entrance, but the park is closed to all visitors until further notice. The city will conduct a complete assessment of the damage in coming days.
