[1] The right fails again in Latin America Date: None If some years ago we saw with concern and sadness what many theorists and academics called conservative restoration in the region; What or who now prevents us from talking about a process in reverse, a process, we are going to tell you, of progressive restoration and of the left? Surely many think that raising this thesis is the product of an exacerbated optimism, and perhaps it is true, but the facts are encouraging, for example, in Mexico a government emerged, which despite its limitations, has made it very clear which side it is on, Evo Morales is reelected in Bolivia, Venezuela and Nicaragua resisted the onslaught; if the forecasts are fulfilled, the Peronist Alberto Fernández will become president of Argentina today with Cristina as vice president, and most interestingly, the right-wing governments suffer an unprecedented crisis, let’s think only of the protests in Chile, previously in Ecuador, the scandals and the low popularity of Bolsonaro and questions to Iván Duque. And what happened? Simply what many alerted: the right would fail again because it has nothing new to offer. For a class issue, for a matter of its own logic, the right cannot do anything other than repeat recipes and sharpen the inequality and misfortunes of the popular sectors. The Argentina that votes today is an obvious example, Macri literally mocked his constituents vowing not to do everything he later did. The list is long, promised zero poverty and multiplied it, promised that there would be no inflation and shot it, promised that there would be no debt and chained the country to the International Monetary Fund. The country has literally sunk. The right does not even manage to keep its windows clean, just look at what happens in Chile, the neoliberal paradigm of the region. Only hours ago that country experienced the most massive demonstration in its history. What leads thousands of people to go outside? What inspires them to face the police, to face the possibility of jail, torture or put their lives in danger? The price of the ticket or the rise in fuels? Of course not, these are the triggers, the “this is too much”, but the causes are in a much deeper and systemic discontent. Now, did these returning forces lie naively? Didn’t they know what they were doing and saying? Obviously they knew, what happened is that they made calculations that some were eventually wrong, for example, the work of the mainstream media was effective in demonizing the leftist leaders and confusing about their great social achievements, they took advantage of the economic blow that meant the fall in the price of certain raw materials that constitute the main income of many of these nations, and obviously, the main source of income for social programs. What failed? They thought that putting those leftist leaders behind bars, accusing them of corruption, would demoralize the progressive forces and bury the possibility of return, but the biggest mistake was, underestimating the strength of the peoples. Now it is even funny to read in the media how some sectors of the right are victimized, they are said as naive victims also deceived by Macri and by all those who fall into disgrace. It is the way of not splashing, and above all, staying with strength and possibilities for the next conservative onslaught, a danger that has proven to be always latent, and hopefully the left has learned to penetrate in all its magnitude.
