PWB PEEPS - Tadpoles in the House, or How I Spent My Summer Vacation [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2022-12-31 It all started last year when I went out onto our deck and found frog eggs in my water buckets and in my solar fountain… I do container gardening, and have had frogs on my deck almost every summer since my first summer here in 2011… this was the very first time that eggs were laid out there... one of my regular visiting froggies this year… not the one who laid the eggs... I knew thee eggs would not survive long in the heat (it was in the upper 90s and breaking 100 degrees nearly every day), and I needed access to my bucket and fountain, so I decided to collect the eggs in a bowl and raise them inside… I purchased a 1.7 gallon table top aquarium, some plants, and food… I set it up, and put the eggs into the Aquarium… I raised and released 84 little green tree froggies last year… it never crossed my mind to not save them and raise them... This year I was more experienced, and she laid eggs twice, about 3 weeks apart… I was gifted a 2nd aquarium and supplies so I could raised the 2nd batch separately, as they were much smaller than their older siblings... Batch 1 eggs... Batch 2 of the eggs, tiny tadpoles inside... the first batch hatched quickly and grew fast... there were a Lot of them… (07-17-2022) I put the filter inside of a dip net to keep them safe and from getting sucked into it… they liked hiding on the bottom and in the plants… Batch 2 babies… (8-12-2022) they grew fast, batch 1 … (8-12-2022) they soon started getting their legs... 8-26-2022, put them in a new container to transition from tadpoles to froggies when they got 4 legs... and oh boy did I have froggies to release… I released them into a bin of my flowers to start their little lives... they climbed the plants and would stay there for days before moving on... leaving the bin... I knew they had a good start, but I always wondered how well they did… I got my answer one evening, after dark, Bear was on the top of the cat tree pawing at the glass door… when I walked over to see what he was hunting, I saw a half grown green tree frog on the glass door... 9-23-2022 … I am sure it was one of mine... I was still transitioning them into Oct... 08-20-2022 and releasing them... one of the last batches released before it got too cold... Altogether, I released 191 froggies this year… But, the story does not end there… I still have about 55 tadpoles… they are split between those who have no legs at all, some still as small as ¾ inch long, and some with tiny legs in 1 tank, and those with larger stronger legs but no front legs yet (about 12) in a separate container… I currently have 1 that has all four legs and I have put him in a sort of make-shift terrarium to let him grow until the weather warms up in the spring… hopefully they will all survive until then… I will do my best to keep helping them along until then...
