Let's Put Our Weight Behind a Moderate Republican [1]

As I watch the proceedings in the House of Representatives as Republicans fight each other to witch extremist person will be elected as Speaker of the House, either Kevin McCarthy or Jim Jordan, I can't help but think that for Democrats neither one will make our lives easier. Actually, I believe that Jim Jordan will turn this Congress into a circus freak show with endless investigations on MAGA imagined deep state conspiracies. This show will diminish the United States' standing around the globe. His circuses will radicalize far more Americans against needed immigration reform, gun reform, social security expansion, climate change and much, much more.



I know watching the Republicans fail in doing the most basic function of government, electing a speaker, may be entertaining. Keith Olbermann said something like Democrats should sit down, shut up and get popcorn. I'm afraid the end result of what happens if one of these two actually gets to the Speakers chair will not be so entertaining.



The best thing that Democrats can do, I believe, is to communicate across the aisle that there are moderate Republicans that the Democratic party would be willing to vote for. That Democratic participation for a moderate would get a Republican across the finishing line with the 218 votes needed, but it won't happen with the choices being presented right now by the Republican Party. A moderate Speaker could usher in an era of bipartisan cooperation.



The Republican Governance Group is a group of around 110 moderate Republicans. There are far more shall we say “closeted” moderates in the Republican party that can't be themselves in this “Trump” era. With the loses to Trump backed candidates in the last election more and more moderate Republicans are feeling that it may be OK to come out of the wilderness and flex their moderate muscles.



The choice of a moderate Republican to the Speakership would virtually cut out the MAGA crazies from high power positions. A truly moderate Republican could get a lot of normal legislation done with his caucus and participation from moderate Democrats. I being a progressive am not super happy about this, but choosing between a moderate Republican and two other Republicans, one who borders on fascist, (Jim Jordan) and the other who wouldn't know that what he was doing was moving the nation towards fascism, (Kevin McCarthy), I choose the moderate.
