The office already has confirmed 1,599 opioid overdose deaths for 2022, and it expects 400 to 500 of its pending cases will also be listed as death by opioid toxicity. In 2021, the county reported a record 1,936 opioid overdoses. As troubling as those numbers are, University of Illinois Chicago researchers say the county may be seriously undercounting opioid deaths. A study by the UIC School of Public Health found at least 633 hospital deaths from 2016 to 2019 that met the criteria for opioid overdose yet were not listed as such by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Roll Call: McCarthy opponents unmoved as speaker election drags on by Lindsey McPherson, Laura Weiss, Caitlin Riley, and Aiden Quigley A bloc of Republican opponents Tuesday kept Kevin McCarthy from becoming speaker on three ballots, and the House adjourned to come back on Wednesday and try again to pick a leader. McCarthy, R-Calif., had told his colleagues as the day began he would not back down, and his supporters said there would be repeated votes. After three votes, the last of which saw McCarthy lose one of his earlier supporters, a motion from McCarthy ally Tom Cole of Oklahoma to adjourn until noon Wednesday was adopted by voice vote. McCarthy had 19 Republicans vote against him on the first ballot, and none moved his way on the second ballot. One more Republican joined the opposition on the third ballot, bringing the total to 20 and dropping McCarthy’s tally to 202. Democrats were united on all three votes, with the full 212-member caucus backing New York's Hakeem Jeffries. So long as all 434 members-elect are voting for someone by name, McCarthy will need 218 to secure a majority and win. That means he can’t lose more than four Republicans, and his opponents well exceed that number. The New York Times: N.F.L. Says Suspended Game Won’t Resume This Week as Hamlin Stays in Hospital by Ken Belson Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin remained in critical condition on Tuesday after he went into cardiac arrest during a prime-time N.F.L. game, a frightening reminder of the ever-present risk of serious injury in America’s biggest sport that has the league facing one of its worst crises in decades. Hamlin’s injury, following what looked like a routine tackle, has the N.F.L. again answering questions about player safety in a season marred by high-profile injuries. With millions of fans watching on television, Hamlin, 24, collapsed in the first quarter of a crucial matchup with playoff implications on Monday night, forcing the league to suspend the game. As Hamlin lay on the field motionless, medical workers feverishly worked to restart his heart. Players were in tears, the stadium went silent and fans watched along in distress as a young athlete’s life hung in the balance. After Hamlin’s heartbeat was restored and he was taken off the field by ambulance, the coaches conferred with the head referee and league executives. The players soon walked to their locker rooms. About 30 minutes later, the league postponed the game, and said on Tuesday that at minimum it would not be played this week. Washington Post: Jan. 6 papers detail infighting, ‘chaos’ among extremist organizers by Hannah Allam How do we know that the architects of a pro-Trump rally that spiraled into insurrection were right-wing extremists? They said so themselves, according to newly released witness interviews from the House select committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. But it doesn’t mean they were all on the same page. Thousands of pages of documents made public in recent weeks portray promoters of the Stop the Steal movement as backstabbing rivals who viewed one another as “crazies,” “extremists,” “nutty,” and “white supremacist.” The documents include a text exchange in which former senior Trump adviser Hope Hicks, while watching the Capitol rioting unfold, lamented, “We all look like domestic terrorists now.” The behind-the-scenes chaos detailed in the report underlines how the risk of violence that day was known in advance, causing alarm even among some organizers who said they had qualms about working with fellow pro-MAGA factions such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, extremist groups whose members later were charged in the attack. BBC News: Makiivka: Russia blames missile attack on troops' phone use by Elsa Maishman Russia has said a new year missile attack that killed at least 89 Russian soldiers happened because troops were using their mobile phones. Ukraine hit a college for conscripts in Makiivka, in the occupied Donetsk area, shortly after midnight on 1 January. Soldiers' use of banned phones allowed the enemy to locate its target, the Russian military has now said. While the number of people killed is unverified, it is the largest death toll acknowledged by Russia in the war. Ukraine claims the figure is far higher, saying 400 soldiers were killed in the attack and a further 300 wounded. Russia said that at 00:01 local time on New Year's Day, six rockets were fired from a US-made Himars rocket system at a vocational college, two of which were shot down. Guardian: Private burial of Pelé in Santos after eight-mile funeral procession by Tom Phillips and Ana Ionova The Brazilian footballer Pelé has been buried in the port city where he began his career nearly 70 years ago, with the country’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, flying in to lament the “irreparable loss”. Pelé, who died last week age 82, scored most of his 1,283 goals for Santos football club and it was at a cemetery near the team’s Vila Belmiro stadium where he was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon after an emotional three-hour procession through town. “This is such a difficult moment … but we feel great honour and pride,” Pelé’s son, Edinho, told reporters after his father was interred. “Now, he will rest.” Pelé’s eight-mile funeral cortege through Santos, which attracted thousands of grieving residents on to the streets, followed a 24-hour public wake at the ground where he had made his name as a teenager in the 1950s. AlJazeera: Israel far-right minister enters Al-Aqsa in ‘provocation’ Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan have joined Palestinians in condemning a far-right Israeli minister’s brief visit to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, with the Palestinian leadership calling the intrusion “an unprecedented provocation”. Tuesday’s visit by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir risks stoking tensions with Palestinians, with the Hamas group that governs the besieged Gaza Strip warning that such a move would cross a “red line”. Ben-Gvir, who was seen at Islam’s third holiest site under heavy security, said: “Our government will not surrender to the threats of Hamas.” The Israeli far-right leader has long called for greater Jewish access to the holy site, which is viewed by Palestinians as provocative and as a potential precursor to Israel taking complete control over the compound. Leading rabbis forbid Jews from praying at the site. Have a good night, everyone and I hope that you had the most pleasant of Happy New Year’s.
