Over the next two years, the Republicans control of the House (if they can keep it with their likely civil wars to come) will expose some extraordinarily broken things. Already, they have been extraordinary: More difficulty electing a Speaker than any party has had since before the Civil War. And not only did it take 15 ballots, but it showed the sheer gangstery nature of the part of the Republican Party that is its most extreme, off the wall, pro-insurrection part. So that we end up with a House of Representatives that being led by a guy who bought them off with a promise to use the threat of a global recession to extort some sort of legislative ransom. Plenty ugly, with there being not a sign that anybody among those House Republicans stood for anything substantial beyond the struggle for power for its own sake. Which leaves me wondering, though: How much of the American public has some basic knowledge of what happened? Did what they saw turn them off? Does this debacle create more openness to the American public’s seeing the Republican Party as the dysfunctional, ugly, destructive thing that it is by the time they go to the polls in 2024? Or was it too unvisual, too in-the-weeds, for it to have created any significant impression?
