Becoming Speaker — at What Cost and for How Long? “My Precious” Gollum met his fate at Mount Doom in Mordor. The only thing “precious” to the hobbit Gollum in The Lord of the Rings is the magical One Ring — the most powerful of the 20 Rings of Power — that bestowed upon him unique powers such as the gift of long life and invisibility. The ring also has the potential to destroy its owner. Gollum used to own it and, and was transformed by the ring into a slimy, monstrous creature. He lost it, and not unlike Kevin McCarthy’s pursuit of the Speakership for a long time, obsessed for years about how to repossess it. In the LOTR trilogy, Gollum attacks the invisible Frodo, perhaps the most famous of the hobbits, and during their fight, briefly reclaims the ring by biting off Frodo’s finger but Gollum loses his balance and meets his fate tumbling into the fires of Mount Doom in Mordor. Both Gollum and the ring are no more. A weight is lifted from Frodo’s shoulders for the ring cannot control and destroy him. Does a similar fate await the servile Kevin McCarthy in the US House of Representatives? Is the magical ring in his possession simply lying low for now only to strike down its owner in the near future? Stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks about Gollum McCarthy’s fate. A mortal, Frodo, who keeps one of the Great Rings, does not die, but he does not grow or obtain more life, he merely continues, until at last every minute is a weariness. And if he often uses the Ring to make himself invisible, he fades: he becomes in the end invisible permanently, and walks in the twilight under the eye of the dark power that rules the Rings. Yes, sooner or later — later, if he is strong or well-meaning to begin with, but neither strength nor good purpose will last — sooner or later the dark power will devour him. — J.R. Lost in the hoopla and chaos on display in the US House of Representatives and eventual choice of Speaker of the House this past week was an important anniversary. On January 6, 2021, there was a coordinated attack on the US Capitol. Will anyone high up in the Trump Regime ever pay a price for it? As I wrote in this diary soon after Joe Biden took the oath of office in early 2021. x Cartoons from 2 years ago pic.twitter.com/Yy13JTJwlv — Paul Noth (@PaulNoth) January 6, 2023 For almost a year, a disastrous, incompetent, and criminally negligent administration chose to play partisan politics, favoring unscientific remedies and solutions unfit for a country founded on the principles of the Enlightenment. The daily death toll kept rising, justified by a plethora of excuses offered that were unfit for this or any other democratic country. For four long years, conspiracy theories — not scientific data — ruled the day with total loyalty demanded of civil service employees whose job it is to provide non-partisan solutions. Finally, violence, not the rule of law, was the path chosen by a group of losers on their way out. Are any of them going to pay a price for this outrageous, unconstitutional, illegal, and criminal behavior? x Mike Luckovich, https://t.co/rncK7t4sep @mluckovichajc #January6thInsurrection #ElephantInTheRoom #GOPClownShowContinues pic.twitter.com/UpOS7lRjDh — Editorial & Political Cartoons (@EandPCartoons) January 7, 2023 Most Americans know a different truth in their gut: we are a better people and country than what was on display early last month in Washington, DC. I live here in DC and the insurrection shook many people who have seen just about everything in this town. Only a bit over three weeks ago, the ascension of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the highest political offices in the land gives many people a sense of hope and restores some confidence in the future. Effective Democratic control of the US Senate and US House of Representatives will, hopefully, make obstructionism a thing of the past and holds the promise of much-needed relief to people struggling in this environment. Finding a lasting solution to the pandemic and restoring some semblance of “normalcy” is the biggest challenge facing America since the Great Depression. x David Horsey, The Seattle Times @davidhorsey #January6thInsurrection #GOPClownShowContinues pic.twitter.com/D7gYVpeou3 — Editorial & Political Cartoons (@EandPCartoons) January 6, 2023 Sounding the Alarm The Clown Show in Washington, DC Unknown Forecast The Shape of Things to Come in the People’s House 2023-2025 The Squeaker of the House Making Him Work for it x e pluribus cartoonum: Day Three https://t.co/RsJdB6VogW — RJ Matson (@MatsonCartoons) January 5, 2023 The 15th Time’s the Charm Meanwhile...
