Made by Allertons in England.. Every first sentence I've imagined leads me off to a hundred untold stories. As a young boy I was, now and then, given over to the care of my father's parents. This is where I take a breath and skip memories that beg to speak. My grandmother was a Wisconsin farm girl, I really can't tell all the stories now, and she was a very accomplished cook. To just the one point, gravy. I'll digress briefly to say, dumplings. When I'd be the grandson houseguest, I always needed to be handy by in the kitchen. Helping bake bread, four loaves at a time. So many little ways she'd have me not just helping, but really contributing. I was tasked with buttering the warm bread, slice by slice. I learned there's an art to that. But what my memory woefully lacks is how she made gravy, and to my grief, how she made dumplings -- and I can almost remember being right there helping. I'll never forget, family gathered at the table, my delicious portion.
