Democrats propose dueling advisory referendum in effort to overturn Wisconsin's abortion ban [1] ['Matt Smith', 'Https', 'Www.Facebook.Com'] Date: 2023-01-18 00:49:00+00:00 The question would have replaced GOP language on work requirements for welfare recipients Hours before the state Senate is set to convene for the first time this year, Gov. Tony Evers and legislative Democrats announced another attempt in their effort to overturn the state’s 1849 abortion ban. Republicans, who control the legislature, are proposing an advisory referendum that went before the state Senate on Tuesday asking whether welfare recipients should be required to search for work while receiving state benefits. The measure passed and now advances to the state assembly. Democrats wanted to replace that language and instead ask whether the state’s abortion ban should be repealed, a move Republicans quickly rejected."Today was about workforce," Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu said. "We have workforce challenges out there. Businesses are struggling to find employees, and that's what we're focusing on with this advisory referendum." Both proposals are advisories and would have no legal or legislative impact. If passed in the assembly this week, the work search question will appear on the April ballot. Some work search requirements are already law to receive certain state benefits. “They’re asking people advice on a law that already exists,” Evers said. “Instead, let’s have the people of Wisconsin respond to something that is not law. Pretty simple.” The state Senate also voted 22-10 to advance a constitutional amendment that would allow judges to consider more factors when setting bail. If approved by the assembly on Thursday, that question will appear on the April ballot as well. Hours before the state Senate is set to convene for the first time this year, Gov.
