Biden should stop worrying and learn to love the platinum coin It would be just as illegal to obey the debt ceiling as it would be to ignore it. All this is why the famous platinum coin is Biden’s most legally defensible option, despite how silly it sounds. A 1997 law clearly grants the treasury secretary the ability to mint platinum coins of any denomination, in part with the intended purpose of making profit for the government through seignorage. If Congress says that the president must spend, cannot borrow, but can mint, then the way is clear for a legal stickler. Mint a trillion or two in platinum coins, deposit them at the Federal Reserve, and hey, presto, problem solved. Economically, it would be virtually identical to borrowing the money, and presumably at some point the ceiling could be raised and the coin spending replaced with normal debt. anycan

Ten of the 11 justices ruled against Dery's appointment, with Justice Yosef Elron being the only one who believed the appointment should be allowed. Despite his conviction, Dery was appointed health and interior minister by Netanyahu, who formed the current Israeli government in late December. Immediately following the decision, Netanyahu arrived at Dery's Jerusalem to discuss their next steps, and according to Israel's Channel 12 News, told him that "When my brother is in trouble, I stand by him."

Inflation is cooling. Why are egg prices still so hard to crack? The eggs are expensive because the chickens are sick. According to data provided by Urner Barry, which follows the food commodity market, the average price on a dozen “Midwest large” eggs was up to $5.46 as of late December 2022, well above the $0.89 it was at at the start of 2020, before the pandemic hit, and even above other highs in the low $3 range last summer. Following the peak egg demand that comes with the holiday season, prices have started to cool off, falling back to $3.64 as of January 17. “There is almost invariably a drop in demand after the holiday baking period, which, in turn, causes wholesale prices to drop,” said Karyn Rispoli, who covers the egg market for Urner Barry, in an email. “This year’s decline has been rather sharp though because of the heights from which the market is adjusting.” … Eggs are mainly extra expensive right now because chickens keep getting sick from a super deadly avian influenza, largely spread by wild birds migrating. The last time the bird flu hit so strong, in 2015, it sent egg prices soaring. Now, that’s happening again, and it’s proving more persistent than last time around.

But the truth is that air quality scientists have been documenting the dangers of gas stoves since the 1970s. “It’s a pretty long-standing literature spanning at least 40 or 50 years,” said Jon Levy, an environmental health researcher at Boston University. “I think it starts from the intuitive sense that if you’re burning a fossil fuel inside your home, it can cause air pollution.”
