Some of you may be well aware of the efforts of the group Appalachian Voices on behalf of the people, wildlife and the environment of this area in general. For those not yet familiar with the organization, information about its mission and activities can be found here: appvoices.org The group has been on the forefront of the fight against Mountain Valley Pipeline and to create thriving, healthy economies for the people of this area. I have been a member for some time. I believe that they spend every donated dollar and hour of time as effectively as possible. They also leave ego behind and work in concert with other environmental groups, sharing credit and burden. That is essential when the human and financial resources trying to do the right thing are opposed by considerable resources, including, sadly, governmental resources at times. I have been impressed by the sound science (natural and social) that supports their policy positions and actions. The group also makes it easy to stay informed on current events and take action on various matters, such as pending legislation and rallies. One can also follow their financials; they post audited statements and impact reports for all to see. So, with that introduction, I would like to share the actions and activities they are currently addressing to see whether you would be willing to lend your voice, a hand or a dollar to their efforts. Thanks for reading. From Appalachian Voices: Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative: Gov. Glenn Youngkin is following through with his plans to withdraw Virginia from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative while legislators are introducing bills that would weaken the Virginia Clean Economy Act, a law that was passed in 2020 that would make the state energy grid carbon-free by 2050. Tell your state legislators to oppose attacks on climate progress with this action from our partners at the Sierra Club. Virginia Legislature: Crucial votes in General Assembly committees this week A House of Delegates subcommittee will hear a bill from Del. Shelly Simonds that prohibits the use of cyanide in mineral mining in the commonwealth. Our communities deserve clean drinking water, but large-scale mining operations that use cyanide put that at risk! On Tuesday, another House subcommittee will consider HB 2283 from Del. Irene Shin, a bill to stop utility shutoffs during extreme weather or public health emergencies. Other actions can be found here: appvoices.org/...
