Just as we learn of the passing of one musical great, our social media and news feeds light up with another. Musical passings are on my mind tonight, as I learned late last night that a friend I know from attending Jams gathering musicians and their fans from the virtual world of Second Life at various real-life locations each year had passed away in her sleep while attending one of these events. I’d last seen her in May at a Jam in Nashville, and I’m heartbroken I won’t see her again. And so tonight I bring you music from a sampling of those who’ve joined the Jam Eternal this year (along with a few so close to New Year’s it might as well have been), and close with a tune from my friend’s favorite band. I hope you’ll add in those I’ve inadvertently missed. December 31st: Modest Mouse drummer Jeremiah Green: December 31st: Pointer Sister singer Anita Pointer: January 1st: Rapper Gangsta Boo, aka Lola Chantrelle Mitchell January 1st: Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White: January 5th: The Whispers founding member & singer Gordy Harmon: January 10th: Guitarist Jeff Beck: January 12th: Bachman-Turner Overdrive drummer Robbie Bachman: January 12th: Lisa Marie Presley: January 18th: the Byrds and Crosby Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young) singer-songwriter-guitarist David Crosby: I could have chosen SO many songs for some of these artists, Crosby in particular… his band CSN was my first ‘real’ concert. But these are my choices, and I welcome yours in the comments! Before we hop over the fold to the evening’s Top Comments and Pictures (Mojo is still broken and awaiting Help Desk help), one final song. This one is for my friend, who saw her favorite band the Avett Brothers more than most of us have seen all our concerts combined. Sunday morning, several of the musicians at the Jam played this song, not knowing our friend had passed away upstairs. I’m gonna ugly cry now, but it’s the only song I can put here tonight. Godspeed, my friend. Until we meet at the Jam Eternal.
