It's no secret that the gas and oil industry has been gaslighting the public about climate change for decades. New information from a study published this month in the journal Science about Exxon's internal research has exposed the depth of that deception. Exxon Mobil, the world's largest oil company, has had internal research confirming the dangers of climate change since the 1970s. Instead of heeding that research, Exxon chose to bury it and fund climate denial propaganda—a campaign that delayed federal and international climate action and investment in green energy for decades.

“We now have airtight, unimpeachable evidence that ExxonMobil accurately predicted global warming years before it turned around and publicly attacked climate science and scientists. Our findings show that ExxonMobil’s public denial of climate science contradicted its own scientists’ data,” Geoffrey Supran told CNBC. Supran is the lead author and one of three academics from Harvard and the University of Potsdam in Germany who published the study.

We can't let this misinformation continue. People around the country, particularly low-income people and communities of color, suffer the economic consequences of crushing energy burdens and poor health outcomes from toxic fossil fuel pollution. Meanwhile, Big Oil has been funding deceptive propaganda to discourage the public from taking action on climate change while acknowledging internally that fossil fuels are damaging to the environment.

Much like the tobacco industry ignored evidence that smoking causes cancer, Big Oil has consistently downplayed climate change because it threatens its bottom line. Exxon and other oil companies enjoy massive profits while horrific weather events ravage the country, costing lives and taxpayer dollars. We must denounce Exxon and the fossil fuel industry for defrauding and lying to the public about climate change.
