After that, she decided that a union job with sick time, vacation, and a pension were a lot better than what she’d been doing. She later told me that she had loved me from the first time she saw me, and I was skeptical, but I learned that was true. I also told her I’d been watching her as she strode up to the outside break room table on the first day she came in. It took me two years to finally get over a grieving period from a death in my family, and pursed (stalked) her until she said “Yes”. She loved horses, and would “borrow” them and hide them from their owners, and then ride them bareback all over the desert with her dog. Had cats, dogs, would drag strays home, and even kept a sidewinder for a while. If a black widow was in the house, she’d gently escort it outside. Jane McAlevey came to town to organize damn near all of healthcare and public service workers in the state. We threw in with the hospital picket lines, recruited new members, leaders, became stewards and executive board members, were negotiating a new public sector contract, and then came Obama! I got to canvass with the Information Assistant to the Australian prime minister. She never backed down from entrenched union “old-timers” at the bargaining table, or any boss in a Member representation. Long blond hair, flashing blue eyes, she could deliver a punch like a man, and out think you. Grasp of the facts, and able to read the room with a glance. The end was tough for both of us, but we still discuss posts from DailyKos, talked politics, and laughed and loved each other. If she needed something, she’d call my name, and Pita would come running with her Timmy-fell-in-the-well bark. We both laughed at that! Better than a bell! The grief is raw, but I’m going to cling like hell to the good memories. God, I love that woman!
