The Impenetrable Dome

Impossible promises are the bread and butter of political campaigns, as we’ve seen time and time again. But few have been as thoroughly debunked as systems to protect us from nuclear missiles. Remember Reagan’s Star Wars initiative? If you are too young to have lived through it, look it up — it’s a hoot, and went precisely nowhere. Now Orange Big Brother wants to get votes by stirring up fears and offering impossible solutions. It will be like a border wall in the sky!

Take a moment to recall how Citrus Blowhard pulled out of the Iran deal, putting the country at great risk of facing a new nuclear power. And how he all but french kissed Kim Jong-un who has built nukes capable of striking the U.S. This is one of his favorite methods: set a fire and then claim to be the only one who can put it out.

It’s worth noting that he called for an “impenetrable dome” (not to be confused with his head!), a clear reference to Israel’s Iron Dome, which is only moderately effective in dealing with home-made short range unguided missiles. In a nuclear war, we would be facing missiles that dodge and deploy numerous dummy warheads, and supersonic missiles like the ones Russia has launched in Ukraine this week.

It’s not only an impossible dream, it begs for the beginning of a new nuclear arms race, maybe even the deployment of nukes in space. There could not be a more irresponsible and empty promise.
