Tyre Nichols Horrific Police Brutality Death and Nothing Changes [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-01-31 Five black cops vs one unarmed black man How many more horrific police brutality incidents must we endure before the law makers in Washington, law enforcement, and the public find meaningful solutions to end this madness? Each time these police barbaric behavior occurs we hear the same old platitudes and there is no meaningful change. Last week in Memphis, Tennessee, the unfortunate victim of police extra judicial killing was Tyre Nichols a 29-year-old black man. Nichols was said by the police to be driving his vehicle in a reckless manner (police video did not confirm this) when they pulled him over. After screaming expletives at him, he was pulled out of his car and then like predatory animals they began the kill. There is something profoundly disturbing when five black cops fatally beat an unarmed black man for no justifiable reason. The brutal murder of George Floyd in May 2020 that got the attention of the world and led to the creation of Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement should have been a lesson to help the police change their tactics in apprehending black people. Unfortunately, it was not a lesson learned. At least you would expect black cops to have some empathy when they encounter black “suspects,’’ especially one that is unarmed. There is something profoundly disturbing when five black cops fatally beat an unarmed black man for no justifiable reason. If these cops were white, then we could easily conclude that this was another example of the systemic racism in law enforcement. This of course would not be a new accusation because there is a long history of the police mistreating black people. Because Nichols murderous cops were all black, one could easily conclude that there was no racism in this case. That conclusion though could be wrong and due to a lack of understanding the nature and scope of racism. His death has everything to do with racism, which is associated with the psychological power or influence that it has over all people to behave in unexpected ways. This assertion implies that black people who are the target of racism can use racism against their own people to gain whatever advantage they seek. In the old days black people who did this were called Uncle Toms. Tyre Nichols cop killers are members of a culture where systemic racism prevails. Like Uncle Toms, they allow the psychological influence of racism to behave in ways that institutional racism sanctions. They have subverted themselves to this morally corrupt system and so they cannot make decisions about what is right or wrong. They simply do what they believe they have the authority to do. When a black man who is being mercilessly beaten…cries out to his mom for help, that should have been a sign for the cops to stop the beating. If Tyre Nichols was a white man, the five cops who beat him to death would not have done what they did to him. They would have treated the white man with kid gloves. This is an assumption that is based on how law enforcement perceives and treat blacks differently than whites. Yes, racism can influence black people to treat other black people with hatred and malice. And it can cause them to treat white people without similar hatred and malice. This is because they know the consequences whether it’s a legal one or social one is not going to be favorable to them. If five black cops had brutally beaten a young white man to death, the outcry and condemnation would be much greater. And we would probably have another Tulsa race massacre to deal with. In his book, America, the Dream, (Page Publishing, 2021), Kenneth S. Brown writes that “The Black’s man desire to mistreats other Blacks was a training and conditioning that began on the plantation.” This is what you could call the “slavery syndrome” and in contemporary times black men who ends up in institutions like law enforcement that has a history of racism are going to be affected by this slavery syndrome. When a black man who is being mercilessly beaten by the cops cries out to his mom for help, that should have been a sign for them to stop the beating. Tyre calling out for his mom was a primal instinct triggered from the fear that he was going die. Some will also ask why did he run from the police? That too was a primal instinct that psychologists call “fight or flight.” A person might put up a fight, but if they are getting the worse of it their instinct tells them to flee. The five cops charged with brutal death of Tyre Nichols are not warrior police like some in the media have been saying. One dictionary definition of warrior is “a brave or experienced soldier or fighter.” These five cops do not fit this definition as they are predators because they prey on vulnerable people who are members of their own race Law enforcement reform will likely never get the approval it needs in Washington to become a reality. Instead of focusing and finding solutions for real changes in the police culture, distractions and obfuscations thwart progress. Black Lives Matter is demonized, propaganda about defunding the police is promoted, and excuses for the police are made. And let’s not forget that the George Floyd Bill for police reform seems dead in Congress. Unfortunately, the public will be subjected to more horrific police brutality of black people when nothing changes. The only change that was seen from the Nichols crime was the quick response in condemning and indicting the five police officers involved. This change might not be enough though as law enforcement in different states have their own autonomous practices.
