Kitchen Table Kibitzing 1/31/2023: Lego Food [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-01-31 I know that KTK folks like a good cooking video. Rather than post anything run-of-the-mill in that category, though, I thought I’d take advantage of the fact that YouTube has me correctly pegged as a weirdo and has been showing me stuff accordingly. Obviously, I encouraged it. There are several talented stop-motion animators who “cook” with Lego. I’ve picked out three who seem to be the most devoted to this specific art form. The Lego Cooking channel is the only one of the three we’re looking at today that gives its location as the US. I’ve included only a couple of videos because, despite the apparently-single-subject titles, all of them are actually compilations of several “recipes”. This is also the most Minecraft-y of the channels. The numerous weird little cat figures (and other animals), though, seem to be endemic to this genre. Lego Salmon Sushi (plus other assorted Lego seafood). [8:31] x YouTube Video Lego Spaghetti and Meatballs (plus steak, cheeseburgers, and lamb chops). [8:19] x YouTube Video The Bebop Stop Motion channel gives their location as South Korea. They’re not 100% committed to Lego — a lot of their earlier work did the same kinds of things with coins and other objects. (One of their earlier ones involved a basketball-and-keyboard sandwich.) These are shorter and more focused than Lego Cooking. Lego Lasagna and Lemonade. [2:03] x YouTube Video This one is Korean street food, specifically bungeo-ppang, a waffle-like fish-shaped sweet pastry stuffed with sweet red bean paste or custard. You can see real ones being made here, in a Seoul market (they even pour the batter out of a kettle like the Lego guy), and because I know some of you will want to know, you can see a Korean lady teach you to make them here, and yes, there is a special fish mold you can buy. See? You learn something every day at Kitchen Table Kibitzing! [3:14] x YouTube Video I think the tomosteen channel is my favorite, so it gets the most space. The channel says they’re based in Japan. They have the best collection of weird little animals, which are showcased in their 1-minute “thanks for the million subscribers” video. (The animals will really come into their own at the end of the diary.) This breakfast might not be Americans’ selection, but it’s fun to watch. I like the alarm clock at the beginning. [3:58] This salad is not even made of Lego, but I had to add it here. marge, this is for you. [2:28] Nothing like homemade Lego orange marmalade! [9:22] Rice bowl with fried pork cutlet. [4:18] At this point, tomosteen is ready to sit back and let his little animals make the food with their fanciful and highly-specialized Lego factories. Here, they’re turning out elaborate cakes. (A million extra points for repurposing the various heads of hair of Lego people as frosting decorations.) [6:17] The Oreo factory is not such an artisanal operation, as befits a rather industrial product. I love this assembly line, especially the Oreo-filling section and its associated quality-control department. [5:01] You can spend quite a bit more time staring at this sort of thing on YouTube (especially now, because it’s been watching you watch these and it will offer you more). I would really love to know how long it takes to do something like this, but so far, I haven’t seen anyone offer a “making of” video. I suppose it would spoil the magic. Or maybe the weird little animals refuse to be in it. See you in the comments!
