Russian ammunition dumps, armoured vehicle groupings, mass barracks far behind the front line started getting hit all over the place in the occupied parts of Ukraine. This played a major role in massively reducing the rate of Russian artillery fire and in creating the right conditions for the Ukrainian Kharkiv and Kherson counteroffensives to be successful. The Russians have reacted by attempting to de-centralize their ammunition dumps and command centers by moving them out of the 70 km maximum range of the standard HIMARS rockets. It looks like that won’t be working out for them anymore: U.S. Readies $2 Billion-plus Ukraine Aid Package With Longer-range Weapons -sources Mike Stone 01/31/23 AT 6:18 PM By01/31/23 AT 6:18 PM The United States is readying more than $2 billion worth of military aid for Ukraine that is expected to include longer-range rockets for the first time as well as other munitions and weapons, two U.S. officials briefed on the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. *snip* The USAI funds would go toward the purchase of a new weapon, the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) made by Boeing Co, which have a range of 94 miles (150 km). The United States has rebuffed Ukraine's requests for the 185-mile (297-km) range ATACMS missile. www.ibtimes.com/… This type of munition will basically double the range of the HIMARS systems that Ukraine already has and comes from munitions stocks that are widely available and far less expensive than the ATACMS missiles. Once Ukraine gets these, basically all Russian miltary targets in the occupied parts of Ukraine outside of Crimea are in range and in trouble. The occupiers will not be able to feel safe anywhere anymore. And once Ukraine moves back down to the Black Sea in its Spring Counteroffensive, all of Crimea will be in range, as well. As Marcos has pointed out in his insightful writings about military logistics, when munitions dumps have to be placed too far back from the front lines, supplying the artillery with enough munitions for the high rate of barrage artillery fire that Russia likes to employ becomes practically impossible. This is going to be incredibly helpful for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. More info about the GLSDB: www.saab.com/...
