In my lifetime growing up, the CJ was the paper of record for all of Kentucky. It was one of “the” Newspapers in our nation. Often though of as a great newspaper that championed the common man or woman in its fight again corrupt officials, the coal barons, and others who sought to use power against the people here in Kentucky. In the mid 80’s. This great newspaper was sold to Gannett. The result of an inhouse Bingham family fight over power and control and I am sure money and influence. As the paper moved through the years, it managed to go online and as we all know through paywalls, lay off of staff and tried to convince its subscribers that everything was being done in the interest of better journalism in changing times. Doing more with less, I believe is the corporate lingo. I, like many, pay once a month to keep reading this paper online. Now I am not sure. Today, the CJ announced it was doing away with the comments section of the online paper. They told us it was because they had noticed the comment section had devolved into attack and abuse by its readers. Bullshit! I know when it comes down to it, hiring a moderator or moderators to follow the rules set by your own publications have a tendency to be a pain. But let’s be real here. It really comes down to another example of corporate “we don’t want to hear it” from our subscribers. I write this diary because I want to warn everyone: You may fall victim to the same type of corporate “why do we need this” policy anywhere here in the United States. I comment regularly on CJ stories. Yep, I don’t like the responses sometime but I remember in this day and age the town square concept was always used as a way to engage the community through the comment section. Now, we have been offered the opportunity to send a letter to the editor. I hate to tell, the Publisher, the Editor and other the following: you wanted us to comment online and now you turned it off. For 29 years of my life, I was a reporter in the media first in Radio and then in TV. When the media does not want feedback, then you should really question why you would want to read, listen or watch anything, the organization has to say.
