Republicans seem to have exactly one tactic when it comes to the national budget: Pretend that there is no possibility of increasing federal income—and then slashing it further with new tax cuts. That is before mentioning that the “poison pill” they forced the country to swallow with the 2013 sequester (that Obama proposed, thinking they couldn’t possibly be that stupid). That didn’t just slow the recovery from the GOP crash of 2007-08, but also hamstrung the IRS’s ability to provide good customer service and go after lawyered-up tax cheats (see: Donald Trump).

Now they seem determined to cause more damage in service to a failed ideology.
