These things are infuriating and need to stop in 2023. Here are the offenses. Reverse discrimination White Fragility Double standards False equivalence Tone policing Cultural appropriation Co-opting Blackfishing Let’s start with reverse discrimination or reverse racism. It’s impossible to discriminate or oppress a group that has had and still has the power, has had and still has control of resources, and benefitted from a power structure that favored this group. It has been weaponized to counter an argument when something tone-deaf and racist was said, when affirmative action was a policy for college admissions, or when employment was denied to white straight cisgender males. White fragility is that defensive, hard-to-reason response when discussing racial inequity, oppression, and implicit/explicit bias A perfect example of white fragility is Governor DeSantis' move to not include all of African American history in the advanced placement curriculum to appease his political base. It tends to deflect accountability and responsibility for an offending action, like tone policing. The point of tone policing is to get out of an uncomfortable talk with subject matter like race, gender, oppression, intersectionality, and police brutality by pointing out the emotion. Co-opting is taking credit for something you didn’t do but someone else did. An example of co-opting is taking credit for legislation another congressperson wrote. I'm not accusing any factions; I’m saying to fact-check those individuals by using congress.gov. A double standard is a set of rules containing different provisions for a certain group but not the whole group of individuals. I don’t like racist or sexist double standards. The purpose is exclusion. False equivalence is saying two actions or people are the same when both are different. An example is saying both Presidents Biden and Dump were negligent in handling classified materials when President Biden was cooperating with the authorities and accepted responsibility while Dump had to be notified to give back the documents while not being truthful. Another example of false equivalence is saying truthful accounts of brutality is critical race theory when critical race theory is taught in college-level courses instead of elementary, middle school, and high school courses. Cultural appropriation is the adoption of a culture without acknowledging its origin. An example of cultural appropriation is Kim Kardashian wearing cornrows, not acknowledging their origin. Here’s an excerpt from the Huffington Post article about her faux pas. Blackfishing is when a White person purposely makes himself or herself Black on the Internet. It’s a hurtful practice in spite of the intention. An example of blackfishing is in this Teen Vogue article about White teen social media influencers. Here’s an excerpt fron that Teen Vogue article. There's a saying that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." But what happens when imitation appears to cross over into cultural appropriation and exploitation? This week, social media found out, after several black women on Twitter publicly accused a number of white female influencers of "blackfishing": some using dark facial makeup, some wearing their hair in cornrows and other traditionally black hairstyles, and others allegedly enhancing their bodies, seemingly to look like black women. The controversy heated up last week when college sophomore Deja (aka "Dee," on Twitter) tweeted images of a DM she said she'd received on Instagram. She said the message revealed that Emma Hallberg, one of the girls she followed on Instagram and whom she believed was a light-skinned black woman, was, in fact, a white woman from Sweden. Thank you for reading and Happy Black History Month.
