About that debt-ceiling blackmail - what if they don’t care? [1]

Speaker in name only Kevin McCarthy - the man without a spine, or a clue

There’s a lot of drama going on as the Republicans return to their old trick of holding the government hostage over the debt ceiling. Funny how that never happens when a Republican is in the White House. So far Democrats are hanging tough. (Well, don’t ask about Manchin or Sinema.)

But here’s a scenario that is looking just a little too plausible to completely rule out.

The people pushing this have spent their careers railing against government; their base believes government is the problem not the solution. Their base wants to see something like this happen.

Remember we’re talking about really stupid people here who have been mainlining their own Koolaid for a long time.

This isn’t about cutting spending anymore. It’s all about “owning the libs” - like Kevin McCarthy kicking Democrats off committees for revenge.

They have a plan. The government defaults and they blame it all on Biden, while boasting about finally doing something about “out of control government spending”.

They’ll be heroes on Fox News, and they figure the mainstream media will find a way to both-sides it at worst, and besides that just shows the media’s liberal bias.

Besides, what’s the worst that could happen to them? These include people who tried to overthrow the government on January 6, some of them — but there they are still sitting in Congress, the worst of them in the catbird seat in the House. Consequences are for other people.

The only thing that might give them pause is the billionaires of the dark money donor class objecting to crashing the global economy - and some of those are crazy enough to see that as a way to cash in.

What are the odds?
