We are developing a multi-part tv series about Life as a Furry. The Furry community is skeptical about this and for good reason. Furry fans have been suckered before by TV guys who promise fame and glory but who only want some weird-looking people to exploit, most notoriously in a 2003 episode of C.S.I. and a sensationalistic article in Vanity Fair. The casting call was accompanied by a photo of a group of fursuiters that was used with out their permission. That’s a big red flag right there. Fursuiters like to have their pictures taken, yes, but they also put a lot of hard work into creating their suits and like to get credit for that work. Also, the producer’s credentials seem a bit thin; the Twitter account the call was sent from was mostly bare, suggesting a fly-by-night operation, and most of its followers are “far-right blogs and propaganda pushers” . It’s bad enough when these are just “Look-At-The-Freaks” hit pieces, but lately it seems like the Right has been using Furries as a dog whistle (if that is the expression I want) for Gay rights, Trans rights, and tolerance in general. Case in point, this past years rash of panics over “Litter Boxes In The Classrooms!” Using Furries to represent Evil Liberals is pretty strange, considering that I know more than a couple of them who are 2nd Amendment-Loving Republicans, but what do I know. Folks in the Furry Community are passing the word through pack to be careful about this guy. At best, it looks like a scam. At worst, it will be “Furries Are The New Groomers”.
