Brian Kemp, and Lt. Gov. Burt Jones are supporting legislation to create a “Prosecuting Attorneys Oversight Commission” which would make it easier to remove local District Attorneys from office. Remember, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, was being investigated by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in connection with the investigation into Trump over his attempts to interfere with Georgia’s election laws (ie: the infamous conversation with Brad Raffensperger), and overturn the 2020 election that President Biden won. Republican Jones instituted a lawsuit claiming that Willis’s investigation of him was politically motivated because she held a political fundraiser for his rival. The Judge overseeing the Special Grand Jury investigation into Trump ruled that Willis’s decision to hold the fundraiser, while not unlawful, created the appearance of a conflict and prohibited her from further investigation of Jones, who was then running for Lieutenant Governor. Republicans sponsoring the legislation claim it is not related to the ongoing investigation of Trump. But, Democrats say the legislation is overreaching, and that voters already have the ability to call for a recall election if they believe the District Attorney is not doing their job properly. However; under the new legislative proposal a recall election would be held, if only, 2% of the voters in the district signed the recall petition. Currently, the law requires that 30% of the voters must sigh a recall petition in order to require a recall election. The new proposed legislation would make it far easier to recall DA Willis, even if she has already indicted Trump, and is in the middle of criminally prosecuting him and his co-conspirators. If DA Willis is recalled and removed from office, a newly elected Republican District Attorney would have the discretionary authority to discontinue the criminal prosecution of Trump before there was a trial. Republicans currently control the Governor’s office, the Lt. Governor’s office, the Secretary of State, and both houses of Georgia’s State Legislature. The proposed legislation presents a clear and present danger that must be avoided at all costs. We all must mobilize to petition the Georgia Legislature not to pass this legislation. We cannot sit by idly and give the Georgia Republicans, including Lt. Gov.Jones, the ability to short circuit the investigation into Trump before it reaches a lawful conclusion.
