I am a daily reader of the Washington Post Op-ed pages, but always try to avert my eyes when the byline says “Marc A. Thiessen” under the title. But just as we slow down for a car crash, it’s very difficult to stop staring at a disaster. The headline from Friday reads “Republicans need to pivot on the debt limit. Here’s a winning demand.” Thiessen actually speaks a bit of truth when he states that in regards to the debt limit fight “Democrats are not going to allow the GOP to repeal all the massive spending increases they passed in the first two years of Biden’s presidency.” That is actually half of a sentence of truth despite the adjective “massive”. The second half reads “and Republicans are not going to drive the nation’s economy off a fiscal cliff.” Of really? And you know this how? Do you read the paper that you write for? It's the next line I love. “Republicans are not stupid.” He does not put any qualifier in there, like “Not all Republicans are stupid” but simply states that if you are a Republican, you are not stupid. When you have to tell someone that they are not stupid, it’s usually because they did something that was stupid and you do not want them to feel bad, correct? So Thiessen recognizes that the GQP has backed itself into a corner with this debt ceiling fight and offers Barely Speaker Kevin McCarthy a way out of the mess. McCarthy, who is smart because he is a Republican, apparently needs advice from Thiessen, who therefore must be smarter. Thiessen argues that B.S. McCarthy cannot cave to Biden because doing so upsets other Republicans, who are smart by default as well, and would replace McCarthy as speaker. McCarthy must have a plan, a smart one of course because Republicans are not stupid. The plan is, dramatic pause, to demand that Biden turn over any classified documents found at Biden’s house. If Biden agrees then McCarthy will use his power to raise the debt limit. Biden would for some reason relent and McCarthy would look like a hero to those that matter for holding the world’s economy as hostage in exchange for 12 outdated documents that time has forgotten. (If you are a Bond villain, holding the fate of the world’s economy in your hands….this is what you ask for?) Thiessen of course does not demand that Pence and Trump do the same for they are not mentioned at all and we are not talking about them. Needless to say, Thiessen’s plan is plainly and patently stupid! A stupid, stupid plan. And if McCarthy should follow his advice, as dumb as it is, everyone will know the stupid reason why he did it…because Thiessen put it in print in the Washington Post. And as for the WaPost editors, “a winning demand”, really? Maybe you can save the KidsPost section by releasing Thiessen back into the wild.
