Ensuring safeguards for abortion care is more critical than ever after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade with its infamous June 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Even when abortion was federally protected, it was still out of reach for many who were impacted by the Hyde Amendment’s restrictions, particularly Black, brown, and Indigenous people, low-income people, disabled people, people living in rural areas, immigrants, and youth.

Now, as we face an even more treacherous landscape for abortion access, reversing Hyde is a much-needed step toward equitable health care access.

With new data showing that nearly six in 10 Americans support expanding Medicaid to cover abortion—and an equal number oppose Hyde—there is no better time for the House to pass the EACH Act. Kevin McCarthy may be Speaker (barely), but just because Republicans are in disarray doesn’t mean we have to be.

Congress must heed the call of a majority of the American people and repeal Hyde.
