An Unexpected Kindness from a Total Stranger [1]

An unexpected bouquet

Today began like most Sundays in my household. My daughter and I got up and had a quick breakfast then headed out to do the grocery shopping. We had about a dozen or so things in the cart when we went to get in line to check out. Just as I got into the line, an African American lady about my age (I’m guessing because she had a little gray in her long braids) came and got in line behind me. She had two bouquets of roses. I told her she could get in line in front of me since I had more items. Just then, they opened another check out and the cashier told her to move to the new line. I followed, but another woman with a big box of produce snuck in between us. The African American lady checked out and I was busy putting my items on the belt when all of a sudden the she was beside me. “I would like to give you these flowers for letting me get in line ahead of you” she said. I was totally caught off guard and I’m sure I stood there looking at her with my mouth hanging open stupidly for a couple of seconds. She thanked me again for letting her in line ahead of me and put the flowers in my hand. I didn’t feel that I went out of my way to do anything nice for her. I always let people with only a couple of items go in front of me when I have a lot. I certainly didn’t think my small gesture merited one of her bouquets. I think I managed to thank her for the flowers before she turned and walked away. I was hoping I would see her in the parking lot when I walked out. I was going to thank her again for the kind gesture and try to give her flowers back but she was no where to be seen.

On the way home, I decided to pay it forward. I got six roses, I decided to take three of them and give them to a couple neighbors who live down the street. They are two sisters with their two small dogs. I used to see them every morning walking the dogs as I was waiting with my daughter for her bus to come. Now I run into them less often but we still stop a minute and chat whenever we met up. I hope they’ll be as surprised by the flowers as I was.
