Black Lives Matter - Art for Social Change [1]

After the George Floyd murder, graduate students, faculty and staff at Portland’s Lewis & Clark College formed the grass root artistic activism group, Art for Social Change, because they believed that

art in relationship transforms lives, builds community, examines social constructs, raises critical consciousness and creates a more just society.

Students in the art therapy, law and undergraduate divisions participated in organizing this group. One of their projects involved creating squares for a pandemic quilt in 2021-2022 that expressed their many concerns related to societal injustices revealed by the pandemic. They engaged in sewing circles across the campuses and within the local community to procure participation from a wide demographic of people.



Using a variety of fabric, yarn, stuffing, embroidery thread, collage, craft supplies and beads, they assembled artistic squares related to a social justice topic that was most pressing to them. After they sewed the squares together, I helped by sewing on a border and backing and tying the corners of the squares.

Each square is a work of art in itself and these are a few examples.

Photos of the work in progress show the diversity of the group and the effort that went into producing these quilt squares.

Full disclosure: my daughter, Dr. Rise, is the director of the Art Therapy department, which is how I happened to have the pleasure of finishing this quilt!
