What makes the restaurant industry so special? This weekend I went out to breakfast and had the most wonderul wait person. She was lovely, with a wonderful personality. She was full of energy, with a beaufiful smile and a bubbly personality. Besides myself and my hubby there were 20 other people in this establishment, six of them were children adding to the chaotic atmosphere. Through all this she constantly smiled and kept people happy with that bubbly personality. I never saw her lose her cool or even pull a face once. This young woman was serving almost 2 dozen people by herself with people coming and going. She was also clearing and cleaning tables and working the ice cream counter as well. I could not belive how hard she was working. All for a low wage and relying on tips. At this point she was clearing the table next to us. I decided that today she deserved to be well rewarded for all her efforts today. Not being the best of public speakers I decided to do what I don’t normally do. I stood up and in my loudest voice I asked for everyone’s attention and a hush came over the the restaurant. I then took a deep breath and said “I think this young lady helping us today deserves a round of applause.” Everyone seemed to agree. After the cheering and applause died down, I added, be sure to leave her a very generous tip! I noticed she blushed when I did this, so when she came to our table with our check, I apoligised to her. Her response was “I’m glad you did it, I got some big tips!” By now the rush was over and we chatted for a minute or two and she explained this was her second job. When I asked if she was going to school she said no, it’s because rents are so high I have to work two jobs to stay afloat. She also said she works 7 days a week. She was only 24, but said she sometimes feels like she’s 84. I think workers deserve a better life than this. No wonder they can’t find people to do these jobs. TO ALL YOU DUMB ASS OWNERS: It’s not that people don’t want to work…..they don’t want to be worked to death! Especially for the meger pay you offer!
