Ex-congressman, federal prosecutor to run for D.A. in Pa. county [1] ['John Beauge', 'Jbeauge Uplink.Net', 'Special To Pennlive'] Date: 2023-02-06 00:11:10.218000+00:00 WILLIAMSPORT – A former congressman and U.S. attorney is seeking the position in Lycoming County where he started his elective career. Thomas A. Marino, 70, announced Sunday he will be a Republican candidate for district attorney in Lycoming County. Current District Attorney Ryan C. Gardner chose not to seek re-election but is running for judge. “I don’t like being retired,” Marino said in a phone interview from Vero Beach, Florida, where he and his wife Edie own a condominium. They moved to Florida in October but he said they will be returning to Williamsport where they own property and their adopted children Chloe and Victor live. “I have to get back to work,” he said. He recently became associated with a Williamsport law firm but he said he has left to avoid potential conflicts if elected. FILE--In this file photo from Dec. 15, 2016 Rep. He served four terms and was re-elected in the redrawn 12th District. He served only from Jan. 3 to Jan. 23, 2019, before resigning due to “a serious health issue.” The three-time cancer survivor said his health is fine and “I am excited” about running for district attorney. No other candidate has announced for the position. He won his third term as district attorney in 1999 but stepped down three years later when he was named U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He resigned as a federal prosecutor on Oct. 12, 2007, and later was in-house counsel for Scranton-area businessman and casino owner Louis DeNaples for three years. Marino along with former U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta co-chaired Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in Pennsylvania in 2015. Marino has since split with Trump, accusing him last year of throwing Barletta “under the bus” by endorsing state Sen. Doug Mastriano for governor instead of the former Hazelton mayor. Trump in 2017 nominated Marino to be director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. But Marino withdrew his name citing his mother’s health issues and what he called false allegations about the Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016 he authored. Critics claimed the bill that was passed in the House and Senate by unanimous consent weakened efforts to block excessive distribution of opioid-based painkillers. The idea of being DA again occurred about a year when Marino said there were rumors he was going to run against Gardner in 2023. He quelled them saying he would not run against an incumbent Republican. When Gardner decided to run for judge, people started calling him to see if he would seek the position, he said. “Serving Lycoming County as district attorney was truly an honor, and unbeknownst to me at the time, it was the launchpad for my 30-year career,” Marino said. “Of all my roles in public service, the job of district attorney was by far my favorite because it had so much meaningful impact on the community.” Marino graduated with honors from both Williamsport Area Community College and Lycoming College. He earned his law degree Dickinson College and spent time in private practice before being elected DA.
