What to expect as Biden gives State of the Union address [1] ['Daily Kos Staff', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-07 Tuesday night brings the State of the Union address and … honestly, is there anyone who’s such a political junkie that they think this is fun? It is an important moment in framing the nation’s current status and the upcoming fights, though, and however you’re watching, at least you won’t be in Vice President Kamala Harris’ position—sitting right next to Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Make a snack, pour a glass of wine or steep a mug of tea, and settle in in your comfy clothes. The State of the Union is a chance for a president to tout accomplishments and outline priorities, sending a message to voters and putting pressure on the opposing party to embrace bipartisan legislation. One key push Biden will make will be on health care, calling on Congress to “finish the job” of expanding Medicaid. He’ll also address insulin costs. Congress—while fully controlled by Democrats—did cap insulin costs at $35 per month for people on Medicare, and Biden will call on Congress to extend that to everyone, not just Medicare beneficiaries. It’s a wildly popular policy that Republicans will never support. A White House fact sheet on Biden’s economic plan also says the president will “highlight the historic progress we have made to bring the economy back from the pandemic and create more jobs in a two-year period than under any other president on record” and “outline the manufacturing boom across the country.” Often, the president’s guests offer clues about issues he will address, so it’s significant that President Joe Biden’s guests in 2023 include the family of Tyre Nichols, the man brutally murdered by five Memphis police officers last month. Sen. Raphael Warnock and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus recently urged Biden to address police violence in his speech. The White House is streaming the speech live and Daily Kos will be providing live coverage. Join us.
