East Palestine, Ohio Train Derailment [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-08 From WFMJ I've never written one of these but being this story hasn't been covered here, I thought I'd give it a try. Friday night, February 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. The resulting fire caused numerous explosions and was quite massive. Evacuations were suggested for those within a one mile radius of the derailment. On Sunday, civil emergency alerts were sent out warning a catastrophic explosion was imminent. A mandatory evacuation was declared for those in the one mile radius who had refused to evacuate. The National Guatd arrived & helped officials going door to door witthin the one mile evacuation zone. Five of the train cars on carried liquid polyvinyl chloride . Trenches were dug & filled with flares. The tankers were drained into the ditches. On Monday, the trenches were set on fire . A large black mushroom cloud resulted. To make matters worse, an incoming weather system formed an inversion (warm air above holding colder air down) & the winds shifted to the northwest. Tuesday complaints began coming in about the smell & smoke being detected beyond the Youngstown area (about an hour to the north). There was also a news story on WKBN about a woman in North Lima, Ohio (about a half hour to the north) who woke up & found all her chickens dead. Many of those in the evacuation zone had to abandon pets & livestock & are currently still trying to find a way to get their animals out. In addition, fish are being found dead in the creeks & streams connected to area of the derailment. Those who live in surrounding areas rely on wells for water. Tuesday night Facebook posts indicated that explosions were heard & the fire had restarted. Today, the rumors were confirmed that the fire has started again. One former Ohio State Representative, Hagan, noted during an interview that the disaster is a direct result of deregulation & trains being permitted to overload & become longer & longer. There was also a report of a train employee who had complained that the trains were being overloaded & too heavy warning about an incident such as this occurring. This train had 150-200 cars . I live 7 miles from this catastrophe. I also have well water. We are being given very little information & the most common answer to our questions is "I don't know". I have a water conditioner & contacted the company who maintains it. I was told they don't know either. The company is in contact with the EPA trying to find out what chemicals are involved & what tests to run for their customers. Local officials are exhausted & overwhelmed. Tempers are short & impatience with reporters is showing. Just yesterday the fire chief became frazzled during a press conference & walked out. (Side note. The criticism of that has resulted in a social media campaign defending the exhausted chief.) More information can be found on local television stations WKBN & WFMJ. The next press conference is scheduled for 3 PM & Governor Dewine is back on the scene. The accident happened right on the Ohio Pennsylvania border therefore Pennsylvania residents are being affected as well.
