OK. Give Mitt a Cookie [1]

Aside from Biden’s incredible crowd work, the big story from the SOTU is Mitt Romney heroically standing up to international man of mystery George Santos. On our “liberal” MSNBC tonight, you could not escape the Sanctification of Mitt, the Republican man of honor who had the guts to call out the sleazebag who has been called out endlessly by everyone from late night comics to New York Republicans. MSNBC’s endless stable of never-Trump Republicans were there to laud brave Sir Mitt. They even dredged up former Sen. Bob (the “Torch”) Toricelli, whose own integrity has just a bit of a taint, to marvel at Mitt’s integrity.

So. OK. Good for Mitt. Just as good for Mitt (much more substantively) for voting to convict Trump on both impeachments, and e.g., for KBJ.

But my goodness, the effusive praise was starting to make me sick.

Two things:

First, let’s keep in perspective that Mitt voted with Donald Trump about 80% of the time. And about that lying? While Mitt’s no Santos or even Trump, those of us paying attention (and reading Steve Benen) in 2012 know Mitt Romney lied at least 917 times during the 2012 campaign:

And they were all supersized fibs: the apology tour; Obama raising taxes on middle class families by $4,000; Obama “ending Medicare as we know it“; Obama endangering the United States by downsizing the Navy and Air Force; and, “we’re only inches away from no longer being a free economy.”

Second, MSNBC, don’t you have anything better to do with this time?

Like maybe covering how an official “watchdog” of journalism, the Columbia Journalism Review, just ran a four part series essentially adopting the Trump (other) big lie that Russian collusion was a hoax? And the author is Jeff Gerth. Sound familiar? Those of us paying attention the ‘90s remember he was the NY Times reporter who flogged the nothing Whitewater story for long enough to lead to Lewinsky. And followed that up with bad reporting that led to bogus prosecution of scientist Wen Ho Lee.

Or maybe finding an angle to follow up on another story, which has faded too soon: Abbott's Migrant Stunt: Expressing Outrage in a Presidential Address about Common Decency.

Or maybe using Biden’s SOTU coup about protection of programs like SS and Medicare to remind people that Republicans in 12 states are daily sickening their people by refusing to expand Medicaid (at minimal or no cost to the state), including racist-praised-by-the-MSM-of-doing-a-great-job-of-establishing-his-brand-Ron DeSantis. How many people actually know this?

Criticizing the most outrageously and openly dishonest low-life in DC is a very low bar.

So yes. Good for Mitt.

Make it double chocolate chip.

But spare me the canonization.
