Gaslight The Movie and Gaslighting by Republicans [1]

I loved that movie, yes it was disturbing. Why on earth that woman was so controlled by her husband that he convinced her that she was insane. He had props, dimmed lights (gaslight) and other things. It is a sad story. It is however relevant to our present situation. The Republicans are no different now than that husband. Trying to tell the Magas that what they see is not real unless it is what they tell them.

I live in a small town, after I retired from NASA, I met this wonderful man who lived most of his life in Hollywood but decided to come here. We like the mountains and love each other, however, sometimes it is difficult. Most people here are fundamentalist Christians and Magas. I used to live in Alexandria, VA, so it is big change. One day after I moved here, I met the Dean of High Schools. I told him that I would love to volunteer as a scientist to teach students about The Scientific Method. He looked at me and said, “We do not believe in the scientific method”. I don’t think that he had the slightest idea about what the Scientific Method is all about, just the word science tick him off. I have always thought that students should be taught about The Scientific Method. It is beautiful. It teaches critical thinking. It applies to many things. First you come up with a Hypothesis, then you test it in many ways, and you decide whether you were right or wrong. At the level of a PhD student, if that student proves his/her hypothesis, it becomes knowledge, even if that hypothesis was wrong, it is still knowledge. So, if we teach students about The Scientific Method, maybe they would be less vulnerable to Gaslighting. But of course, this is not something that religious zealots would like. They would never want to apply The Scientific Method to the Bible or any other stuff like that. I believe that our students should be thought how to THINK!!
