Look no further: GOP majority wants a Christian nation [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-09 The Bible said it That disquieting feeling the GOP was gunning for a Christian theocracy to replace democracy? Well, there is now proof: A new survey of more than 6000 Americans reveal a majority of GOPers identify themselves as adherents or as sympathizers of Christian nationalism, at 21% and 33% respectively (54%). Those who trust far right news outlets and Fox News? 79% and 54% in total. Looks like Tucker Carlson’s replacement theory gaslighting has them all worked up and sweating bullets. This is a fascinating and exhaustive survey carried out by the Public Religion Research Institute and Brookings designing a Christian nationalism scale based on 5 key questions: The U.S. government should declare America a Christian nation. U.S. laws should be based on Christian values. If the U.S. moves away from our Christian foundations, we will not have a country anymore. Being Christian is an important part of being truly American. God has called Christians to exercise dominion over all areas of American society. Four groups were identified by their responses to these questions. A scale given in parentheses separates these groups: Adherents (0.75-1.0), Sympathizers (0.5-0.74), Skeptics (0.01- 0.49), and Rejecters (0.0). In that sample, 10% identified as adherents, 19% as sympathizers, 39% as skeptics, and 29% as rejecters. Whew, what a relief, we still have a majority tethered in sanity. Unsurprisingly, white evangelical protestants are the most foaming in the mouth, virulent Christian nationalists. 64% believe the Bible should replace the Constitution and Jesus should replace the founding fathers. Education and age are the leavening factors. The more educated, the less inclined you are believing this total nonsense. And the Democrats are right in investing in youth, who are overwhelmingly clear eyed rejecting the Rapture and believes in a pluralistic society benefiting all. This is the part of the survey that I found most interesting: These Christian nationalists are not really concerned about a just society. Rather they look on at poverty alleviation as a function of individual charitable acts rather than a societal obligation. Jesus is found in Joel Osteen’s prosperity gospel and that’s where their obligation ends. There are more disturbing trends: More than 75% of white Christian nationalists reject anti Black racism, specifically in the areas of generations of slavery and racism creating enormous difficulties for black Americans working their way up, and agreeing that discrimination against white Americans is equally a big problem as it is for blacks. Oh, and almost 40% of them believe American Jews are beholden to Israel than to the USA and that they are extremely tightly knit. That globalist cabal their orange overlord was banging about, eh? And surprise, surprise, they are not just anti-Semitic but Islamophobic too. Muslim bans, anyone? Amy Coney Barrett was raised in this patriarchal religious cult submitting to a male figure. In a truly Christian family, the husband is the leader of the household and the wife submits to his leadership. Well, it gets two thumbs up from the Christian nationalists. Guess what? January 6th crops up. The police is overwhelmingly supported by both Republicans and Democrats but the GOP really reserves its affection for the local police serving in their constituencies. The Capitol police not so much. Maybe it has to do with that insurrection, eh, or as some Georgia representative glibly stated, “a normal tourist visit.” So, not so much sympathy for those tasked with stopping the steal and why those 5 officers who lost their lives as an aftermath don’t really garner much GOP sympathy. And here is where it really, really gets real. These Christian nationalists are ready to be violent and are twice as likely to have used violence to settle differences. Admittedly, these are small numbers but they are ready to be triggered. And it only takes a few to bring many to grief. The GOP and Christian nationalism. Joined at the hip. There is much to be unpacked from this survey and I probably missed tons but it offers both despair and hope.
