Five days after massive earthquake odds are getting long, but dramatic rescues are still being made [1] ['Daily Kos Staff', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-11 Three hours after the rescue of that woman in Elbistan, a 16-year-old girl was brought out alive. x In Kahramanmaras, 16-year-old Hedil was rescued alive from the rubble of the Emerald Apartment 135 hours after the earthquake… pic.twitter.com/lFa2mNEKcg — Tansu YEĞEN (@TansuYegen) February 11, 2023 But sometimes even that moment of triumph is only a reminder of the losses. A man who was pulled from the rubble at 132 hours, immediately asked rescuers to allow him to go back in so he could look for his wife. “Find my wife,” he begged the workers as they carried him to an ambulance. “Find my wife.” The man’s four-year-old daughter had been rescued earlier in the day. Across the border, Syria’s White Helmets have been smeared by the Assad government which has painted these emergency workers as supporters of various violent groups, including ISIS. Russia and right wing sources have also insisted the White Helmets are aligned with rebel militaries and with extremist groups. Leaders of the group insist that the White Helmets are neutral and have no goal beyond providing emergency assistance. With United Nations forces refusing to cross the border due to restrictions and threats made by brutal dictator Bashar al-Assad, this burden—like so many others—has fallen on the women and men of this organization that has performed heroically on many occasions. Warning that this video is a tough watch. Not because of violence or gore, but for the heartbreaking interactions between the trapped child and the rescue workers. x The White Helmets are absolute heroes. Every single one of them. This extraordinary video played out dozens, hundreds of times throughout NW #Syria this week — the @SyriaCivilDefe deserve every accolade out there. pic.twitter.com/ewTmrdL5uz — Charles Lister (@Charles_Lister) February 11, 2023 How has Assad responded to this crisis? On Tuesday, Middle East Eye reported that Syrian government forces bombed areas that had been hit by the earthquake just hours following the disaster. Reuters also reports that the head of the White Helmets has lashed out at the United Nations for claiming that a small convoy of humanitarian supplies which crossed into Syria this week was earthquake related when it was actually part of a distribution scheduled before the disaster occurred. However, even as the United Nation fumbles assistance to the hard hit areas in Syria, the rescue and recovery efforts following the earthquake are generating amazing moments of international cooperation. Borders are being erased by people working together with the same desperate goals. Earlier today, Bloomberg reported that Armenian aid trucks have crossed the border into Türkiye. That may not sound extraordinary at first glance, but this is the first time an Armenian vehicle has driven across that border in almost 30 years. x Humanitarian aid from #Armenia crossed the Margara bridge on #Armenia-#Turkey border heading to earthquake-stricken region. pic.twitter.com/7lwWrbE3fa — Vahan Kostanyan (@VahanKostanyan) February 11, 2023 The frequently tense situation between Greece and Türkiye also seemed to be a very distant concern this week, and Greek rescue teams hurried to the disaster area. x It’s in moments like this that political differences pale in face of human tragedy. Millions have been left homeless. If you can, please donate to organizations who are helping with the rescue, providing assistance to the rescue workers, and who will be there in the weeks that follow to help when the world’s cameras have turned away.
