“I just watch the Super Bowl for the commercials.” Well, isn’t that the stinkin’ point?

Honestly, I get it. I used to be a sports fan. Sometimes there’s magic in sports performances. And a championship game is where that’s likely to happen. But how many of us really care much about either of the teams playing today? And, if you do care, why?

I was a Braves fan, back before their fabulous 14 year run dominating baseball, or at least the National League. Yes, I was a Braves fan when there was only a 3,000 average attendance at games. But I can’t tell you the name of anyone associated with the team anymore. My perspective has changed.

I was a Green Bay Packers fan. They are the most egalitarian team in the NFL; they own their own stadium and didn’t ask their city to pay for it, and the team itself is owned by the fans. No other team has this structure. And Brett Farve was beautiful to watch, Sunday after Sunday. Well, my perspective on him has changed a great deal over the years, too.

I have never been a fan of basketball (can’t stand the squeaky shoes,) or hockey, but my rant pertains to these sports, too. And, for the record, college football is even more unconscionable than pro ball, trading bumps on the head for an education! There’s some irony for you!
