Nixon is sworn in, and ends the war in Vietnam, in a week: Headlines from 1973 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-12 The USA pulled out of Vietnam, and many folks from there, are located in my hometown, Wichita, Kansas. Now, Afghan refugees, also. In case you missed it, I have been posting history diaries, every two weeks. On the other weeks, I post some of the hit songs of that year. Here is the link to the source of my headlines: en.wikipedia.org/… Here we go: January 20 – Richard Nixon is sworn in for a second term as President of the United States. Nixon is the only person to have been sworn in twice as President (1969, 1973) and Vice President of the United States (1953, 1957). That was fast. The Troubles, indeed. April 3 – The first handheld mobile phone call is made by Martin Cooper of Motorola in New York City. I wonder how large and heavy that phone was. We switched our focus, from visiting the Moon, to setting up an orbiting resort hotel. June 24 — UpStairs Lounge arson attack, an as-yet unsolved attack on a gay bar in New Orleans, Louisiana, in which 32 patrons are killed. I read something about that, a few years ago. Some folks were burnt alive. Look it up, and see if that is right. August 15 – The U.S. bombing of Cambodia ends, officially halting 12 years of combat activity in Southeast Asia according to the Case–Church Amendment-an act that prohibits military operations in Laos, Cambodia, and North and South Vietnam as a follow up of the Paris Peace Accords. I thought that all ended on the 27th of January. I have never understood that conflict. October 17 – An OPEC oil embargo against several countries supporting Israel triggers the 1973 energy crisis. Because of that oil embargo, drilling rigs were sent out, to explore, to see if they could find more oil fields, beyond those that already had wells drilled and pumping. During that time, I got a job on a drilling rig, Abercrombie Rig 12, drilling in northwest Kansas. I worked on that rig for six months. We did not find any oil, in that time. I injured my left foot, which had flare ups as late as 2010. I now wear arch supports, under my insoles with arch supports. I have been pain free for the last few years. Getting closer to the end of the Nixon Administration. Spiro Agnew had resigned, that is why a new VP was needed. Good thing Nixon appointed somebody, before he, Nixon, resigned. December 6 – The United States House of Representatives votes 387–35 to confirm Gerald Ford as Vice President of the United States; he is sworn in the same day. I did not know that both the Senate and the House had to vote on that. Seems like that was a nice thing to do. Okay, here is the link again: en.wikipedia.org/… Feel free to post more headlines, from that link, or any other source, or your memory. Hugs!
