Super Bowl, Shmooper Bowl... [1]

Down on your knees and worship your master!

This was originally a comment I left on “The Archaic Sport of Football” (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/2/11/2152411/-The-archaic-sport-of-football, but figured I’d give more people a chance to give it a read on this S*p*r B*wl S*nd*y morning...

Beyond all the injuries, the billionaires extorting public money for their private teams, etc., one of the things that most freaks me out is the secular religiosity surrounding "The Big Game," aka The Super Bowl. (Uh oh, I said The Big Game’s True Name without giving the NFL licensing $$$ — here comes their intellectual property lawyers, led by The Simpsons' nasal blue-haired attorney — somebody hide me, quick!)

Seriously, that legally enforced "Big Game" euphemism reminds me of my Hebrew school upbringing where it was forbidden to say God’s name while praying, which we replaced with "Adonai” ("My Lord"). The NFL was also clever in leaving the Sunday before The Big Game empty of football, building up 2 weeks’ worth of Big Game anticipation waiting for "Game Day” to roll around. (I suspect "Super Sunday" is also NFL-copyrighted & trademarked.) Thus we have mandatory Big Game parties, with every supermarket, restaurant and fast food chain hawking food platters for the occasion for the gathered celebrants. The entire nation stops dead for The Big Game — it's just like Thanksgiving, only privately owned! (And hey, even the commercials airing during the Big Game are a Big Deal, let's talk about them for a week too!)

Sorry, but I couldn't care less about football, no matter whether it's a Small, Medium or Large game; if I wanted to see burly guys piling atop each other, I'd watch gay porn instead.
