One million pounds of vinyl chloride, a highly toxic, flammable, and carcinogenic industrial compound, were spilled and burned off. Sharkmeister's diary includes pictures of the damage done to the paint and plastic of a car that was driven in the cloud of burnt vinyl chloride now hanging over this densely populated area between Pittsburgh and Youngstown. The damage being done to people’s respiratory systems is probably on a level that defies imagination. This area is part of the 6th Congressional District of Ohio, which has been represented since 2011 by (anti)Republican Bill Johnson. The biography on Congressman Johnson’s website boasts that he “has led the effort in the House of Representatives to defend the oil, natural gas and coal industries -- and the millions of jobs, and affordable energy they provide -- from executive and bureaucratic overreach, and to secure American energy independence.” (anti)Republicans like to talk about personal responsibility. It allows them to obscure and disguise their cruelty and animus towards people less blessed than themselves. Congressman Johnson should be getting LOTS of calls and attention today, and the rest of the week, from journalists and constituents, wondering if his personal crusade to protect corporations “from executive and bureaucratic overreach” had any role in the breakdown of transportation safety regulations that allowed this disaster to occur in the district he represents, and if he is willing to accept personal responsibility for any such role.
