I went back in glee after it became a national best-seller. It’s been 16 years since we lost that national treasure, Molly Ivins. I expect those of you old enough to remember her miss her distinctive voice as much as I do. I began to read her columns when I lived in Texas for a bit, back in the 1980s. Her first book, Molly Ivins Can’t Say That, came out after I’d moved to Boston. I ran off to the nearest bookstore, across from Harvard, to get a copy, and a snippy clerk informed me that they wouldn’t carry it because it was only of “regional interest.” “Mark my words,” I replied, “that book will be on the NYT best seller list inside of a month,” and so it was. Some classic quotes from Molly Ivins: On Pat Buchanan’s culture war speech at the 1992 Republican Convention: “It probably sounded better in the original German.” “I have been attacked by Rush Limbaugh on the air, an experience somewhat akin to being gummed by a newt. It doesn't actually hurt, but it leaves you with slimy stuff on your ankle.” “Next time I tell you someone from Texas should not be president of the United States, please pay attention.” Here, for your enjoyment, is a Molly Ivins speech, hosted by Maya Angelou. In this half-hour talk, she touches on Texas politicians, gun control, evangelical Christians, separation of church and state, growing up in Texas, the first amendment, and more. I listened with such nostalgia for her inimitable Texas voice and her gift of laughter. This site also has links to her columns and many other talks. And, having reminded ourselves of the passion and joy she shared with us, let’s follow her advice: [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/2/13/2152810/-Remembering-Molly-Ivins-I-sure-do-miss-her Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
