"White, Straight, and Easy to Manipulate" Voters — The Week in Editorial Cartoons, Part 2 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-13 Link to Part 1 of This Diary — Killing Social Security and Medicare — The Week in Editorial Cartoons, Super Bowl Prediction Edition The Summary Attribution: Christian Adams @Adamstoon1, Political Cartoonist for the Evening Standard (UK) Part 2 of the diary focusses on Floriduh Governor Ron DeSantis. The editorial cartoonists see him as using racist dog whistles and conjuring up imaginary hot-button issues to attact GOP voters. He is portrayed as a gun rights advocate who is all-too-happy to give priority to guns over educating children. The cartoonists see him as dismissive of black history and the long civil rights struggle for equality, contemptful of transgender rights, and promoting culture wars to manipulate and rile up his gullible voter base. The remaining cartoons deal with the hapless Republicans in the US House of Representatives, led by House Speaker-in-name-only Kevin McCarthy. For a few weeks now, Donald Trump has become an afterthought for most of the editorial cartoonists and they seem to have moved on from him. At least that is the distinct impression I get from scanning and saving hundreds of cartoons every week. There are 25 editorial cartoons and relevant images in this diary. I’ll try to post another 10 or so cartoons in the comments section. Part 1 contains over 75 editorial cartoons in both the text of the diary and comments section. A number of them deal with the sinister Republican plan to destabilize two of the most successful federal programs ever: Social Security and Medicare. Others criticize the boorish behavior of US House Republican members (Marjorie Taylor Greene, in particular) during last week’s State of the Union Address by President Joe Biden. The President is portrayed as being above all of the blatant partisanship on display. The response by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) is seen as being largely ineffectual. In other cartoons, Ron DeSantis is referred to as “DeFascist” and racist with one cartoonist labeling him as a “Banana Republican.” Other issues covered include Super Bowl LVII, the passing of legendary music composer Burt Bacharach, police brutality, and the weaponization of the federal government by the GOP.
