Jaron Crane, R-Nampa, would allow parents to sue schools and libraries if employees gave their child “harmful” material or if the institution failed to take “reasonable steps to restrict access” to “harmful” materials for minors. The bill mirrors a current Idaho law that prohibits giving children under 18 “harmful” material that features “nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement or sado-masochistic abuse” when it’s lewd or “patently offensive to prevailing standards” among adults. “Sexual conduct” under the law includes depictions of masturbation, homosexuality, sexual intercourse and physical contact with genitals and female breasts. The law, if passed — which seems a lock in right-wing Idaho — would be a nihilistic combination of fascism and futility. Fascism because schools and libraries — which already run on limited budgets — would probably self-censor to avoid endless court cases. And futility because teens can access an ocean of internet porn. Who would have thought that teachers and librarians would be cast as enemies of the state? I know teachers and librarians. Most are not motivated to create a socialist pornographic paradise of unfettered hedonism while demanding gay sex and gender fluidity. They want kids to read a few good books and learn stuff. If some of those books depict gay relationships or gender identity struggles, so be it. We live in the real world. Not a fantasy Eden where conservatives believe all kids are straight and whose gender reflects their genitalia. However, as the state will enact this law, I recommend that Idaho parents take a long look at one book with all manner of “perversions” boldly splashed across its pages. This abominable tome has stories of: And that is just the first book of the Bible — Genesis.
