On Fox & Friends on Thursday, Brian Kilmeade—who, apropos of nothing, once tried to roast a marshmallow live on air with a plastic spoon—appeared eager to ask Haley about her potentially disqualifying test for mental competency. x Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, when asked how Donald Trump would do on her proposed mental competency test for politicians over the age of 75: “I think he did great the last time he did it. I have no reason to think he wouldn’t do well this time.” pic.twitter.com/0YesQgZzOP — The Recount (@therecount) February 16, 2023 Transcript! BRIAN KILMEADE: “How would Donald Trump do on a competency test … at 76 years old?” NIKKI HALEY: “You know, I think he did great the last time he did it. I have no reason to think he wouldn’t do well this time. But I do think we need it. And it’s across the board. I don’t think it’s for president. I think you look at Congress. Look at all the members of Congress. You have to start doing this for elected officials. When people send someone to Washington, they need to know they’re at the top of their game. That’s why I think those competency tests are important.” Here’s an idea: Maybe we could give mental competency tests to everyone who wants to run for high office—along with comprehensive psychological exams to make sure they're not psychopaths who want to march our military through the streets to maintain order or shoot immigrants in the legs for attempting to seek asylum. While most conservatives will see Haley’s proposal as a dig at Biden, Trump has continually showed, to put it politely, low energy, a lack of stamina, and a telling confusion about what dementia tests are used for. We all know that Trump passed a dementia test in 2020, because he never stopped talking about it. (Assuming he was telling the truth, which is never a good assumption.) RELATED STORY: Trump is still bragging that passing a dementia screening test is evidence of his genius Sadly, many of us have had to deal with parents or grandparents who’ve suffered from dementia. One of the biggest symptoms is constantly repeating yourself—like bringing up over and over and over again that you know the difference between an elephant and a camel. I’m not saying Trump has memory problems, but they tend to administer these tests to people they suspect of having dementia—so this is hardly the flex Trump thinks it is. RELATED STORY: Person, woman, man, camera, TV: How Trump underlines his very real cognitive issue But since Haley appears not to have completely thought this through—telling seniors they need to prove they’re not defective before applying for a job could spur a bit of backlash, don’t you think?—maybe we should suggest ways she can take her proposal even further: Donald Trump will be administered the test, but he reserves the right to turn any misidentified safari animals into elephants with his Sharpie. All senior candidates will be asked what they did when they first heard about the 9/11 terror attacks. If a candidate says they “immediately started bragging that they now have the tallest building in Manhattan,” there’s something seriously wrong with them and they should never be president. Any U.S. Senate candidate over 75 must spend at least 15 minutes in the same room with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. If their blood pressure doesn’t dangerously spike and they don’t exhibit clear signs of agitation and confusion, they’re clearly not aware enough of their surroundings to serve in government. Anyone over 80 who tries to resign from Congress must make their announcement while a guy in a Grim Reaper costume stands behind them the entire time, looking over their shoulder at their speech. Anyone, of any age, who willingly supported Donald Trump or, God forbid, actually worked for him, is clearly not competent—mentally or morally—to serve. That’s just a start. No doubt Nikki will want to sharpen her rhetoric on this sometime before she drops out next February. In the meantime—keep threatening Social Security and alienating that key voting bloc, Republicans. Democrats already have young voters in our corner. Maybe at some point a majority of seniors will realize that Democrats are the ones who are really on their side.
