A couple of old-time NorCal breweries made the news this week, as Drake Brewing of San Leandro will be taking over Cloverdale-based Bear Republic.

Drake’s will acquire all of Bear Republic’s recipes, formulas and intellectual property, and Drake’s will produce the full Bear Republic lineup of beers — including the iconic Racer 5 IPA... [Bear Republic founder Rich] Norgrove and his longtime brewmaster, Peter Kruger, will continue to work with the Bear Republic brand, and their beer will continue to be brewed in Cloverdale. But brewing will transition to San Leandro over the coming months.

My favorite Bear Republic beer was “Hop Rod Rye”, the first Rye IPA I ever had. That style was popular for a couple of years but now it seems like the whole IPA world is all about hops and everybody uses a very similar pale malt foundation.

I only have one of the Old Speckled Hen. It’s a nice start, now for some hoppy California beer. I think I have some from Faction in Alameda. What are you drinking? Anyone brewing?
