Who hasn’t adopted a style that was outside of the commonplace, at least for a time. Maybe you considered yourself a hippy back in the day. Or a Goth. Or maybe you created a costume and persona for the Renaissance Faire or the SCA. More recently, maybe you dressed up for a Sci Fi convention or a Steampunk event. But what Gen Z has done with personal style is somewhat different. Young people have grown up with tiny computers that fit in a pocket and which can broadcast pictures or video over the internet all over the world in the blink of an eye. When the pandemic shut everything down and separated us all one from another, Gen Z created explosions of style through apps such as Instagram, Tik Tok, and YouTube. Cottagecore, Dark Academia, Witchcore, Fairycore, Afrofuturism are just some of them. Any historical style, any fantasy are food for these modern aesthetics. Here’s Abby Cox on Modern Aesthetics connection to aesthetic movements of the 19th century (31 minutes): What is Cottagecore? This is a good explanation. You may have entered the Cottagecore aesthetic unawares — especially if you like baking your own bread, growing veggies, making jam, wearing long dresses. (I can identify.)/Karolina Zebrowska explains (22 minutes): Dark Academia is a romantic view of higher education— the operative word here being “romantic”. Think brown tweeds and horn rim glasses, fountain pens and leather bound books, in general a fantasy of studying classics, poetry, art or music in hallowed Oxbridge halls without actually being there. (16 minutes): This is enough by way of introduction to the many, many branches of modern aesthetics. I have noted in the videos that I’ve explored that the movement is very respectfully inclusive and shies away from cultural appropriation— at least, that is my impression. Personally, I love the freedom of personal expression that these aesthetics give. Gen Z is to be applauded in giving every young person permission to create their own beauty and to share it. Are you drawn to any particular aesthetic? Please share in the comments! The weekend begins now. Come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
