During her all-too-short time on this Earth, Noble Fur accompanied me on five cross-country journeys between my home in Georgia and my summer jobs in the Northwest. Each of these years, we made at least one trip to my cabin in Okanogan County in northern Washington. The cabin sits in a patch of larger trees. The cabin sits on an isolated 40-acre parcel of land, on a dry hillside dominated by ponderosa pines, sagebrush, and boulders. The two nearest towns, Tonasket and Republic, are 20 miles away by road. The cabin is off the grid: No running water, no electricity, no internet, no phone signal. Half the people reading that last sentence would regard the place as hell on earth; the other half would call it paradise. Noble Fur’s first visit to the cabin in 2016 was documented in this diary: Noble Fur, Road Warrior, Part 3 For this diary, we jump to 2017 when I took numerous pictures at the cabin that never got posted at Daily Kos. Let’s explore the grounds with our intrepid kitty. For a kitty from the flatlands of Georgia, she was very surefooted. Sometimes she would jump unexpectedly, and I had to make sure that she had enough slack in the leash. Holes in the rocks were everywhere. All were worthy of exploration. Enlarge. A fallen tree makes a convenient walkway. Enlarge. Looking for motion in the bushes. Enlarge. The rock tells a story that human senses cannot easily discern. Enlarge. Another crevice to explore. I never allowed her to go inside. Rattlesnakes occasionally hide in the rocks. This rock smells...orange! Enlarge. No, kitty, I don’t think you can jump that high (she was very confident in her abilities). Heights didn’t bother Noble Fur. It helps to have four paws. The forces of geology are evident in the slowly separating rocks. Standing on a burnt log. The last fire on the property was at least 30 years ago. Charred logs take a long time to decay in the dry climate. Enlarge. Relaxing at the end of the hike. Enlarge. All of the above pictures were taken within the span of one hour on September 29, 2017. There is plenty of material in my archives for more such diaries. In case you missed the first two entries in the series, here are the links. PWB: Noble Fur Fridays - Road Trip from Washington to Utah PWB: Noble Fur Fridays - Road Trip from Colorado to Illinois I will be on the road when this diary posts, traveling home from a forestry conference in Florida. I’ll join the conversation when I have the chance.
